Aches and Pains Blend

Over the last six years I have had just as many orthopedic surgeries, plus living with a diagnosis of a connective tissue disease that causes joint pain and swelling.

Despite all that, I average 15,000 steps each and everyday and work six days a week teaching yoga and pilates. Basically I am one busy and active girl.

What keeps me going?

  • Serious self care
  • Early to bed every night
  • Healthy foods
  • A consistent Gratitude practice
  • Essential oils regimen

This is my favorite pain reliving blend. I apply this to the sore spots and along my spine daily. It is effective, affordable and has no side effects other than relief.

Essential Oils and Children

Now that I am grandparent (ack!) I am learning all about essential oils and children.  When I had my kiddos I had no idea I could swap out over-the-counter remedies for natural options. I sure wish I had these choices! I am determined to make sure my sweet little grandbaby gets to use essential oils and learn the natural way. I have been learning so much and want to share!

First, parents who are new to essential oils should know that essential oils and plant parts have been used for centuries to promote wellness, and are not a new fad or trend, but a tried and true solution for many of life’s everyday problems. Families in ancient Egypt used plant extracts and oils for everything from cooking and beauty treatments to embalming and religious ceremonies. For centuries, families in China have continued practices that promote wellness by using plant extracts and materials. Plant extracts and oils were a major staple in the households of ancient Rome, as plant parts were used for their fragrance and calming properties. After centuries of safe use, parents can rest easy knowing that essential oils have been proven safe and effective time and time again.

Because essential oils are naturally occurring compounds found in plants, they are a popular ingredient for many commercial products. Essential oils are often used in perfumes, soaps, candles, lotions, and skincare products to add fragrance. Due to their powerful purifying properties, essential oils are also frequently added to cleaning agents and products. Chances are, you most likely already have products in your home that contain essential oils. The benefit of using pure essential oils on their own is that it allows you to avoid the harmful toxins and chemicals that are often added to household products.

As mentioned, the key to safely and successfully using essential oils on children is observing the special safety guidelines that have been set to protect children from overexposure or sensitivity. As a parent, it is important to remember that the rules for using essential oils with children are different than those for adults. By observing specific guidelines when it comes to essential oil dosage, dilution, application, storage, and more, you can help your children safely and effectively enjoy the benefits that essential oils have to offer.

Dosage Because children have a smaller body mass; have thinner, more sensitive skin; and are still developing, their dosage level of essential oils should always be smaller than adult doses.

For a comparison of adult versus child doses of essential oils, take a look at the chart below: This chart provides general guidelines for dosages when it comes to using essential oils with your children, but remember to always consult your child’s physician about any specific health conditions or concerns before using essential oils on your child. Diffusing essential oils in your home will allow your children to reap the benefits of your favorite essential oils, and is one of the safest and simplest forms of application. Dilution Many parents have concerns about the topical use of essential oils with children because of their sensitive skin. The best way to protect a child’s delicate skin when using essential oils topically is to dilute before application. Diluting an essential oil with a carrier oil like d?TERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil before applying it to your child’s skin will help reduce the risk of sensitivity. Always supervise children during essential oil usage. Perhaps the most important safety guideline when it comes to essential oils and children is to ensure that your child only uses essential oils under adult supervision. Even if your children are used to essential oils and know how to apply them, it is always best to supervise any oil application to ensure safety. Essential oils are extremely potent and powerful, and many children do not understand concepts like dosage, dilution, and sensitivity. In addition to teaching your kids about applying essential oils safely, it is important to always be present when any essential oils are being used around your children.

Arborvitae–Before your next family hike, dilute Arborvitae oil and apply to the wrists and ankles to repel insects naturally.

Basil— During homework time, diffuse Basil oil in your child’s study area to promote a sense of focus for studying, reading, or completing other tasks that require mental clarity.

Cedarwood–Cedarwood oil holds relaxing properties that can soothe the body and mind. When your child wakes up scared in the middle of the night, dilute Cedarwood and apply to the bottoms of the feet to help them return to a peaceful feeling.

Cilantro— Dilute Cilantro oil and apply to your child’s fingernails and toenails to keep them looking clean and healthy.

Cinnamon— During your child’s nighttime routine, dilute one drop of Cinnamon oil in two ounces of water, and have them gargle the mixture for a cleansing mouth rinse.

Clary Sage— Before your child goes to bed, apply one drop of Clary Sage oil to their pillowcase to help them prepare for a restful night of sleep.

Clove–Clove oil holds cleansing properties that are particularly useful for oral hygiene. After your child’s six-month cleaning at the dentist, add one drop of Clove to their toothpaste to help maintain a clean mouth.

Coriander— The fresh, green aroma of Coriander oil makes it both relaxing and stimulating. When your child is working on homework or an important project, diffuse Coriander in an essential oil diffuser nearby.

Eucalyptus— To promote feelings of clear breathing and open airways for your child, dilute Eucalyptus oil and apply it topically to your child’s chest. As your child breathes deeply, the oil will provide an invigorating vapor.

Ginger–During a long car ride or road trip, diffuse Ginger oil in the car, or place a drop of Ginger in your child’s palm and have them inhale the aroma.

Grapefruit— If you have a teenager who is struggling with skin imperfections, add a drop of Grapefruit oil to their facial cleanser or moisturizer to help improve the appearance of blemishes. (Avoid sunlight or UV rays for up to 12 hours after application.)

Lavender— Add Lavender oil to your child’s bath, or dilute and massage on your little one’s abdomen to promote calming and soothing feelings.

Lemon— If your child craves sugary juices or sodas, add a drop of Lemon oil in a glass of water for a fresh, flavorful beverage. (This can also be done with Lime, Grapefruit, Wild Orange, and other essential oils).

Marjoram— Harness the calming properties of Marjoram by applying diluted Marjoram oil to a fussy child’s feet before their nap.

Melaleuca— To help with occasional skin irritations, dilute Melaleuca oil and apply to your child’s affected areas.

Peppermint— When your child feels overheated, add a drop of Peppermint oil to a cold water compress, or to a cold foot bath to help them cool down.

Sandalwood— Help promote relaxation and reduce stress by adding one drop of Sandalwood oil (Indian or Hawaiian) to your child’s evening bath.

Vetiver— When your child is having a rough day, dilute Vetiver oil and apply to the child’s neck and bottom of the feet to help promote calm feelings.

Wintergreen— Whether your child plays soccer, football, lacrosse, hockey, or any other sport, you can keep the unpleasant odor of their gear at bay by putting a few drops of Wintergreen oil on a cotton ball and placing it in their practice bag.

Aromatic use In addition to the essential oil uses designed for children listed above, one of the simplest and safest ways to help your children experience the benefits of essential oils is through aromatic use. By diffusing essential oils in your home, you can create an invigorating, calming, relaxing, or uplifting atmosphere for your children. Diffusing essential oils can also help purify the air in your home when you want to dispel unwanted odors or produce a clean, fresh scent. Diffusing essential oils in an essential oil diffuser is a simple way for the entire family to experience the powerful benefits of essential oils, without worrying about dosage or dilution.

Now that you know that essential oils are in fact safe to use with children, and have educated yourself about the safety guidelines, it is time to learn about some of the best essential application methods for children. While children can enjoy essential oils in many of the same ways as adults (with proper dilution and dosage), there are many essential oil usage methods that are unique to children.

Freedom

We have all heard of the metaphors of feeling stuck in a cage and not able to be free to fly, or the imprisoning walls that have been built around us. The brick and mortar is often what we place around ourselves that create our own version of prison.  These can include negativity, questions of worthiness, regrets of the past and worries of the future. Similarly the key to the cage that we so often feel trapped in resides in our own hands. It is our choice to stay in the cage or take the key and unlock it.  No matter what circumstance we are in, we ultimately have choice in what we do with it.

We are not our circumstances, instead we are our possibilities.

As I was planning this month’s classes around the concept of freedom and being liberated, I received a message from a dear friend whose young daughter was just diagnosed with autism. Heartbreaking as those initial words were, I saw within a few short days a woman take on this experience like that of a true champion.  Sure, she cried her eyes out and felt fear for the unknown.  We all do when we hear those words.  The first thing I did was send her the Welcome to Holland Poem.  Then we talked awhile about what may lie ahead as she leaned on my experience to help her navigate the first few steps on this new and scary journey. Then she got busy.

She certainly could have felt like this news was a giant reason to give up and stay stuck.  Many do.  She however, in her warrior spirit, immediately saw a need to advocate and start asking questions about services and community integration for her sweet little girl.  She took this as a chance to make a difference in the lives of her daughter and others.

That is what freedom is.

Freedom is defined as the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. My friend refuses to feel imprisoned by this diagnosis and she will use the power of her light to act and speak without restraint.

This is just one of a million examples of how we can feel stuck, trapped, locked in, or caged.  Whether it is a relationship, a job, a location or a belief you have about yourself, WE have the power to act, speak and think without restraint and hindrance.  We are in control of what we do with our circumstances.

Do you feel imprisoned?  Are you the one laying the bricks down and filling them with mortar?  Do you hold the key in your hand and refuse to unlock the door?

What would freedom feel like? This month we are going to chisel away the beliefs and fear that build a wall around ourselves.  We are going to slip the key into the lock and learn to fly. We are going to feel free.

How to Use Mala Beads

Whether you’re just starting a meditation practice, or you’re an advanced practitioner, Mala beads are a great tool to help focus your attention. They provide this amazing tactile sensation to come back to when your mind starts to wander.

Rolling the beads through your fingers is a physical way to direct your energy and attention back to the present moment. It’s a gentle reminder every few seconds to reground and refocus.

Here are some simple ‘how to’ steps for incorporating Mala Beads into your meditation practice:

  • If this is your first time using a Mala, start by holding it out in front of you.  The tassel represents an end point — signifying you’ve gone all the way around the Mala for a full cycle of meditation. Between the tassel and necklace loop, there is one single bead, called the guru bead.  There are 108 beads in the necklace loop.
  • Now, start with the necklace in your dominant hand, tassel facing towards you
  • Start with the bead to the right of the guru bead
  • Begin turning each bead individually in your fingers, making your way slowly to the next bead
  • When turning the beads, try not to use the index finger as that is believed to represent the ego.
  • Try using your thumb to turn the beads. You can use your thumb nail to pull the bead towards you. Or you can use your thumb to rotate the bead by turning it and moving to the next.
  • You will notice there is hand knotting between each bead, this is meant to help ease the practice of moving from bead to bead.

Do you feel have the hang of it? If you are comfortable try adding some breath work.

  • On each bead, take a deep inhale and exhale. Then move to the next bead. Deep inhale and exhale.

Once you have the breathing down, you can layer in mantra.

  • On each bead, along with your breath, try silently repeating your mantra to yourself
  • For the sake of this, we will use an affirmation based mantra, which is an “I Am statement”
  • On each bead, inhale “I Am” and exhale a word that embodies how you want to feel in that moment. It can be abundant, strong, patient, intuitive, etc.
  • Inhale “I Am” and exhale your word on each bead
  • You can also simply use one word such as grounded, or love
  • Once you have made it around 108 beads, you will reach the guru bead
  • The guru bead signifies a moment to pause and sit in reflection. Here, you can thank and honor your guru, your mantra, and yourself for taking the time to sit in stillness.

Congrats! This signifies a full practice!

What did you notice in this practice? What came up for you? One thing is guaranteed —  your mind will wander. When it does, simply return to the beads.

When your mind wanders, you have the choice to judge yourself and think things like “I’m the worst meditator, I’m never going to get the hang of this.”  These statement only keep you in a place of self judgement and are not useful.

Or, you can acknowledge you’ve had some thoughts, let them go, and return your focus to your Mala beads, your breath and your mantra.

You’ll be challenged consistently in your practice with a wandering mind. It doesn’t mean your a bad meditator — it just means you’re human.

Meditation isn’t about eliminating the thoughts. Rather, it’s about creating space between them, allowing yourself the room to connect to your higher self.

Your mala is a beautiful guide on that journey to the inner self. But remember, like most things it’s a practice.  Make a decision at the beginning of each practice to not judge yourself when your mind wanders. Instead, treat yourself with patience, grace, and love — as you would anyone else.

Jasmine Essential Oil

Believe it or not, Jasmine is actually from the Olive family and it’s fragrance is POWERFUL! This is no weak scented flower or gentle aroma…it stands up and lets you know it’s in the room! it is sweet, tenacious and floral but with fruity and herbaceous undertones. It’s intense…and LOVELY!

In fact, it’s so powerful that historically it’s been known as “Queen of the Night” and “moonlight of the grove”. Women across the centuries have used and treasured this flower for it’s beautiful and aphrodisiac-like fragrance. And it has always symbolized hope, happiness and love!

It’s primary uses are for the Hormones and for Emotional Balance.

Hormonally, it supports the body where sexual health is concerned, as well as menstruation, pregnancy, labor and delivery. Hormone imbalance also can manifest in the body through the skin, by way of eczema caused by emotional imbalance, as well as dry, greasy, irritated and sensitive skin.

Emotionally it’s reaches deeply into the deepest layers of the soul and opens doors for our emotions to find expression.

Jasmine nurtures healthy sexuality and can ignite passions that have been dormant. Because it helps to foster healthy intimacy and trust, it can help create a positive sexual or intimate relationship where there might have been unhealthy intentions and motivations before. This oil encourages us to honor and respect ourselves and others.

If there is past sexual trauma, jasmine helps us to resolve that pain, and trauma and release it’s hold on our life and heart. It encourages safety within intimate relationships and invites only the truest and purest intentions to our sexual experience.

It Pairs beautifully with two other oils that are known for their powerful sexual properties…cinnamon and neroli.

Inhale this directly from the bottle, or apply to the pulse points in the body. Also can be applied topically over the sacral chakra (lower stomach, lower back and behind the ears.

Lavender Essential Oil

It almost feels silly to write a post about Lavender. It is usually the ONE oil that most of us know inside and out and use the most often in our oil experience.

But today, I hope to share a few things about Lavender that might be review for some of you, and brand new information for others!

Lavender is lovingly referred to as the “Swiss Army Knife” of Essential Oils, simply because it has so many uses and is so versatile in ALL the body systems and functions that it’s known for.

This gorgeous oil is sweet, floral and slightly herbaceous in it’s fragrance. It also has some woody undertones that keep it from being overly sweet to the senses.

Children and adults gravitate toward this oil and because of its gentle but powerful nature and because it can be used NEAT (undiluted), it makes it a soothing oil for both the body and the emotions.

This oils is steam distilled from the lovely purple flowering tops of the lavender plant, and has been used for thousands years for its medicinal properties.

The list of individual health issues it addresses is FAR too long to list here, but includes everything from Seasonal Threats (aka allergies), anxious feelings, bug bites, bee stings, anything to do with the skin, highly energetic kids, stress, sleep issues, burns of any kind, all sorts of wounds…and very single thing in between.

The body systems it is especially adept at addressing are the Nervous System, the Cardiovascular System, the Skin or Integumentary System and everything to do with the Emotional Balance in the body, mind and spirit.

And it’s properties don’t stop there!

It is a chief enemy of bacteria, viruses, fungus, inflammation, toxicity, and all things mutagenic in the body, and works tirelessly against these and many more invaders of the body that can’t legally be mentioned here. 🙂

It can be used Topically, Aromatically AND Internally.

My very favorite way to use lavender is a drop in my hand, imagining the power packed goodness in just that one single drop. I’ll then rub my hands together and cup them over my nose and mouth, taking 5-6 BIG, Deep, Life changing inhales. This allows about 1 minute for the sensors in my nose to carry the chemical messages from the olfactory system, directly to my limbic brain where all of my emotions, stress, memories, and hormones originate.

In doing this, I can feel a tangible and immediate release of all stress, anxiousness and tension that I often carry in my body….and in it’s place, a calming. relaxing, and tranquil energy. Who can’t use more of that?!

I then, take my hands and rub over my forehead, my heart space and back of my neck as that is generally where I carry the weight of the world.

EMOTIONAL BENEFITS OF LAVENDER

I touched on some emotional benefits of Lavender above, but there’s so much more to the Emotional benefits, that it warrants having it’s own section!

Lavender is called the Oil of Communication and Calm.

That’s because often our minds are overactive and struggle to find an outlet of verbal expression. In fact, even those who talk a mile a minute often do so because their minds are going far far quicker than their voice can keep up with.

Whenever there is insecurity or apprehension about speaking our truth or even articulating in our own minds what that truth is… Lavender steps in and calms those insecurities and allows for us to have the courage to risk being seen and heard .

Oftentimes, we have been shut down, shushed, and told we are too much or our ideas and thoughts are too much or not enough, so we tend to shut down our expression of those thoughts and ideas. We tend to just go through the motions, making small talk along the way, but deep inside, we know we are holding back our truest expression of our innermost thoughts. This holding back creates a disconnect in our soul and eventually, we tend to lose ourselves and our authenticity of expression altogether.

Lavender encourages Emotional Honesty and doesn’t rest until it’s helped us to speak our innermost thoughts and desires. This expression brings freedom and liberation and it’s through this that we begin to fully experience what we need in this life through love, acceptance and peace.

So if your mind is constantly racing, or you feel fear around expressing your truest self, or even feel like maybe you are unseen, unheard, unloved in any way….Lavender will gently remind you that it’s safe to calmly breathe, express what you need, and embrace the feeling of being seen and loved just as you are.

Santosha: The Path to Contentment

Contentment is defined as a state of happiness and satisfaction.

Emotionally it is in the middle of the emotional scale and vibrates at a fairly neutral resonance. It is that space within us where all is okay. It is a feeling that offers neutrality and a sense of ease because there is not the push for more.

When I first began to understand what it meant to live yoga, I wondered if I could I ever really achieve contentment?  The Sanksrit word for contentment is santosha which means to cultivate a sense of being all right with who I am and what I have. And yet, we are humans who have been conditioned to constantly crave and strive for more. Yogi or not, I have dreams and goals so contentment, or santosha, often eludes me. Both on the mat and off the mat.

My work is to balance my dreams with the presence of knowing that all is okay.  I mean REALLY knowing that all is okay.  I can still have my dreams, but right now, in this breath, all is okay.

When we look at this on an emotional level, we see just underneath contentment on the emotional scale is complacency.  And just above it is hope.  So this middle ground of contentment could take you either way, depending on your awareness and your willingness to be, or not to be.

In my life, when faced with a challenge (on the mat or off),  I have three choices.

  1. Stay in contentment. I could recognize that my true self is pure and perfect. I can know that I am whole and good enough, right now.
  2. Slip into complacency. I could get lazy in my efforts and desires.  I could choose to weaken my desires and make excuses as to why it is not worth the effort due to my smugness and perhaps falsely known self-satisfaction.
  3. Rise into hope. I could take a breath and aim for a feeling of expectation and desire for goodness to happen.  I could take in the knowing that dreams and desires are right there waiting to arrive.

I  definitely do not spend much time in complacency. Although I am often vibrating higher in hope, optimism, positive expectation, enthusiasm, passion and ultimately deep appreciation, I am striving to also exist in the space of contentment.

Categories of Essential Oils

Discovering the Families of Essential Oils: Florals, Trees, Herbs, and Citrus

Essential oils offer us the essence of plants in their purest form, and each oil carries its own unique energy and purpose. By grouping them into families—florals, trees, herbs, and citrus—we can begin to understand their qualities on a deeper level. Whether you’re seeking grounding, uplifting, clarity, or emotional balance, exploring these categories helps you choose the perfect oil for your needs.

Each family has a distinct personality and connection to body, mind, and spirit:

Florals: The Heart’s Whisper
Floral essential oils, like lavender, rose, and jasmine, carry soft yet powerful aromas that soothe the heart and uplift the spirit. These oils are often used for calming emotions, opening the heart chakra, and inviting feelings of love, compassion, and peace. Their delicate scents remind us to slow down and savor the beauty around us.

Trees: Grounded Strength
Tree essential oils, such as cedarwood, sandalwood, and fir, offer a deep, earthy aroma that connects us to the wisdom of nature. These oils are perfect for grounding practices, meditation, and emotional stability. Just as trees root deeply into the earth, these oils help us feel steady, supported, and anchored in our daily lives.

Herbs: Nature’s Healers
Herbal essential oils, like basil, rosemary, and peppermint, are vibrant and invigorating. They bring clarity to the mind, awaken the senses, and support physical and energetic cleansing. These oils are ideal for moments when you need focus, vitality, and a fresh perspective.

Citrus: Sunshine in a Bottle
Citrus essential oils, such as orange, lemon, and grapefruit, are bright, cheerful, and full of life. Their uplifting aromas spark joy, energize the body, and clear away stagnant energy. Perfect for mornings or whenever you need a boost of positivity and lightness.

Preparing the Soil

I think of early March as a time to prepare for growth. To toil the ground and prepare ourselves for deep growth.  I also love spring and the symbolism it represents.  It is during the spring time that we often think of beginnings, newness, and growth.  For some, this is a great time to begin to cultivate your “soil” to soon plant seeds of intention. One way to do this is to write down anything in your life you wish to increase–friendships, health, abundance or joy, are just a few ideas.  Be clear with your visions as this brings life to your “seeds”.

Next, it is so important to prepare your inner “soil” by eliminating and removing the old and now transpired blossoms of last year.  The memories of past that have come and go and no longer as vibrant as they were just a few short months ago. When we invest time in preparing ourselves for a season of growth (no matter what time of year, really) we must start with cleaning up the areas so that we are open to allow space for growth. When we spend time doing this we are investing time into right now.  We are dirtying our hands with the fertile soil that awaits.

As you do this, become aware of the subtle changes in Nature during this time of the year.  You might see the peeking of crocus bulbs emerging from the hardened winter ground.  Watch as the trees begin to grow tiny nubs that will soon break into full leaves.  Listen as the birds start to make song in the early mornings and the air has a scent of newness.  Use all of your senses to experience what is happening around you.

As we connect with Nature we also connect with ourselves. We realize that we too, are ever-changing and growing beings.  We can set the seeds of intention and begin to nurture and cultivate what we wish to have grown in our lives.

This month in my classes we will be exploring cleansing postures to eliminate the old and make space for new.  We will also be looking at ways our bodies can twist and unwind to come fully into the now.

Here is to growing, less pain, more joy and flourishing!  Happy Spring and while you are preparing your soul for growth it is never a bad idea to get your hands dirty in Mother Earth, either.
