Capricorn Energy: An Essential Oil Blend for Ambition and Balance

Capricorn, the earth sign ruled by discipline, determination, and practicality, carries a steady and focused energy that helps us build lasting foundations. While Capricorns are natural achievers, they also benefit from moments of balance and self-care to nurture their inner strength without burning out.

This essential oil blend is crafted to support Capricorn’s grounded nature, promoting clarity, calm, and resilience. With earthy, warm, and subtly uplifting aromas, it encourages focus and steady progress while inviting a sense of peaceful balance—perfect for anyone embracing Capricorn’s energy, whether it’s your sun sign or simply the vibe of the season.

In this post, we’ll explore the key oils in this blend, their benefits, and how to use them to align with Capricorn’s wise and steady spirit.

It’s my birthday week and I am all about tapping into my Capricorn characteristics. I love being strong-willed, hard-working and even a tad bit stubborn.

Capricorn Diffuser Blend

•Wintergreen is the oil of surrender. It can assist the strong-willed individual in letting go. Wintergreen invites individuals to surrender these strong opinions. Wintergreen reminds individuals that they not have to face life on their own.

•Eucalyptus is the oil of wellness. Eucalyptus encourages individuals to take full responsibility for their own health. It also bestows trust that one’s needs and desires can be met, even if they allow themselves to be well.

•Geranium is the oil of love and trust. It assists in reopening the heart so that love may flow freely. At its root geranium heals the heart and reminds the individual about unconditional love for all.

•Lemon is the oils of focus. The delightful citrusy aroma of Lemon oil nourishes the mind and aids concentration. While Lemon supports the emotional body, its major effects are experienced in the mental field. Emotionally, Lemon inspires a natural playfulness and buoyancy in the heart. It assists in releasing feelings of despair and hopelessness by restoring joy.

This is gonna be in my diffuser all week as I celebrate the beautiful process of aging gracefully.

Essential Oils and the Brain

The limbic system is the emotional control center of the brain. It processes your sense of smell and deals with three key functions, emotions, memories and arousal (stimulation).

Here is a quick vocab lesson:

Neuron: (also called neurone or nerve cell) is a cell that carries electrical impulses. Neurons are the basic units of the nervous system. There are up to 100 billion in the brain and they can send information from the brain to the rest of the body.

Neuropeptides: small protein like molecules used by neurons to communicate with each other.

Neuropeptides stimulate hundreds of activities in the body including food intake, learning taste smell and memory.

Receptor: a cell usually a neuron which receives stimuli from neuropeptides.

Neurotransmitter: sends information between neurons, via a neuropeptide by crossing synapse. They are chemical messengers.

There is an outside stimulus of some sort (I call them circumstances) and the brain has a chain reaction that is set off quicker then we can realize- you have a thought, and that thought is actually converted into a neuropeptide that is sent to the cells in the body, literally changing the chemistry of every cell in you body and causing a physiological response based on the neuropeptides released. So in a very real way, your thinking becomes part of you on a cellular level. The different neuropeptides that are sent are what we feel as emotion in the body and the physiological response.

Smell is so powerful because the olfactory bulb gives smells a direct passage into the limbic system, where they imprint with emotional responses we have to that outside stimuli. They become part of the memory of the thought/emotional response to a circumstance. The more we think a thought and have an emotional response, the more the memory, or neuropathway is strengthened in our brain.

That is why emotions can trigger such strong responses in us. Essential Oils, in my research, work different ways in the body and brain to effect emotions. First, they can interact with the limbic system and the amygdala, which plays a major role in storing and releasing emotional trauma. When you smell an oil, it can clear receptors in the cells, detoxing emotion. Citrus oils are great at clearing receptors in the cells, which means they can help with emotional detox on a cellular level. Oils can also help to disrupt thought patterns and help establish new ones (new neuropathways).

Personal example, when my thoughts would start spiraling and I’d start having anxious feelings, I would stop, smell serenity and repeat thoughts that my brain could believe (this is really important) that helped me change the response in my body. Ex. “I am in my home, I am safe.” My brain starts to recognize the pattern of smelling an oil and having a positive thought pattern and “chemical response” in my body.

Our bodies are synergistic. Emotions happen on a cellular level, just as physical health is on a cellular level. When we use an oil, we will have a physical and an emotional component because they are inseperable in the body. Oils that cause emotional responses are having specific effects either in the limbic system or in the cells of the body.

Honoring the Winter Solstice: A Time for Stillness and Renewal

“I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars.”

Honoring the Winter Solstice: A Time for Stillness and Renewal

The Winter Solstice marks the longest night of the year, a sacred pause where nature invites us to slow down, turn inward, and embrace the quiet beauty of the season. As the earth tilts gently toward the returning light, we’re reminded that even in the darkest moments, new beginnings are quietly stirring beneath the surface.

This is a time for reflection, releasing what no longer serves us, and planting seeds of intention for the months ahead. By aligning with the rhythm of the solstice, we can create space for rest, renewal, and the soft whispers of our inner wisdom.

In this post, we’ll explore simple and meaningful ways to honor the Winter Solstice—through rituals, mindful practices, and gentle moments of self-care to nourish your body, mind, and spirit as you welcome the return of the light.

In yoga, and in astrology, the sun symbolizes the soul. The word “solstice,” in Latin, means sun standing still, so in a sense, we could say the soul stands still on the solstice—maybe even long enough for you to catch a glimpse of it, as some legends say you can at this divine time of year. The darkest night contains the most magnetic power, too; this is a time to draw forth what you want, to incubate your best intentions. As you enjoy the longest night and the brightest lights of the season, please remember this: your soul is the light of the world. You carry the light within you. You shine.

The Solstice is a time of quietude, of firelight, and dreaming, when seeds germinate in the cold earth, and the cold notes of church bells mingle with the chimes of icicles. Rivers are stilled and the land lies waiting beneath a coverlet of snow. We watch the cold sunlight and the bright stars, maybe go for walks in the quiet land. . . . All around us the season seems to reach a standstill — a point of repose.

These longer hours of darkness allows us to see into the deepest and darkest parts of our soul and presents us with an opportunity to go within and become aware of the subtle stirrings within our beings.

Winter darkness has a positive side to it. As we gather to celebrate the first turn from winter to spring, we are invited to recognize and honor the beauty in the often unwanted season of winter. Let us invite our hearts to be glad for the courage winter proclaims. Let us be grateful for the wisdom winter brings in teaching us about the need for withdrawal as an essential part of renewal. Let us also encourage our spirits as Earth prepares to come forth from this time of withdrawal into a season filled with light.

The winter solstice celebrates the return of hope to our land as our planet experiences the first slow turn toward greater daylight. Soon we will welcome the return of the sun and the coming of springtime. As we do so, let us remember and embrace the positive, enriching aspects of winter’s darkness. Pause now to sit in silence in the darkness of this space. Let this space be a safe enclosure of creative gestation for you.

Self Care Routine

Do you have a self care routine?

I used to never practice self care and my overall health was poor. I was angry, toxic, heavy (in all areas) and just an overall hot mess.

I began a consistent self care routine about 12 years ago and now it is a crucial part of my life. My mind, body and spirit thank me.

My self care routine is vital to me being able to show and serve the people in front of me day after day. Teaching anywhere from 25-30 yoga classes each week to adults with disabilities can be exhausting physically and emotionally.

The way that I recharge and make sure that I have enough to give includes:

• at least two walks per day, even if it’s just for 20 minutes. I begin my day with walk, and end with a walk. If I am lucky, I grab a lunch walk too. I often pack a lunch that is easy to eat while walking and I always keep an extra pair of walking shoes in my car for impromptu walks.

• I wake up very early every day so I am able to get in my planning time/calendar time—which keeps me grounded and centered—as well what I call spirit time; I might journal or pull cards, or sometimes just sit and be, like meditation or breathing.

• I take at least one bubble bath per day, though most days it’s two. I either catch up on emails or leave my phone aside and relax into the bubbles. If I’m feeling behind, getting work or marketing or graphics made during bath time is actually more relaxing that putting off these tasks for another time. I tend to not relax until the tasks are all completed.

• I use essential oils daily—part of self care and slowing down is learning to listen and intuitively know what my body is needing. I use them for a variety of uses and have spent years educating myself on their benefits and properties. I feel empowered that I have choices and can use them effectively to treat pain, sleep, energy and much more.

• I get 3-4 massages per month as part of my self care practice. I used to think it was an indulgence. Now I realize it is a necessity.

• I practice mindful eating habits and choose small meals 3x a day and drink plenty of water.

What does your self care look like? If you’d like to learn more, I have some events later in the month! You can peek at my yoga image for listings.

And here is a listing of all my services—maybe some self care sounds good to you!

When Great Trees Fall

“When Great Trees Fall

When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.

When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.

When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.

Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold
caves.

And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.”

With their ability to stimulate circulation, soothe the scalp, and strengthen hair follicles, certain essential oils have been used for centuries to promote healthy hair growth. I have been growing my hair out for some time. I decided a couple of years ago that I want to turn 50 with long, beautiful red hair. I wont say my hair is long, but it is much healthier and happier. Plus, this smells so good.

In a 2oz spray bottle:

  • 10 drops cedarwood
  • 10 drops geranium
  • 10 drops peppermint
  • 10 drops Clary Sage
  • 10 drops rosemary
  • 1oz witch hazel, top off with water.

Spray your hair once or twice a day!

The Power of Stress Reduction: Creating Space for Calm and Healing

The Power of Stress Reduction: Creating Space for Calm and Healing

In today’s fast-paced world, stress can feel like an unavoidable companion—one that quietly weaves its way into our thoughts, bodies, and even our sleep. While a little stress can sometimes motivate us, too much over time can leave us feeling depleted, anxious, and out of balance. That’s why learning to reduce and manage stress isn’t just a luxury—it’s an essential part of caring for your whole self.

When we take time to slow down and soothe our nervous system, we create space for our body to heal, our mind to clear, and our emotions to settle. Stress reduction practices like mindful breathing, gentle movement, and even the calming scents of essential oils remind us that peace is possible—even in the midst of a busy life.

In this post, we’ll explore why stress reduction is so important and share simple, nourishing ways to invite calm and resilience into your daily rhythm.

Do you ever feel like there’s just too much on your plate, or not enough hours in the day? If you rush through your day, it can be bad for your health. Medical experts say that more than 75 percent of diseases and disorders are related to stress. If you can learn to turn your stress level down a notch, your body will thank you. The people around you might thank you as well.

QUIET TIME… YOUR BODY NEEDS IT

If you can learn to quiet your mind, it helps recharge your emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Otherwise, we are constantly reacting instead of reflecting. “This can hinder our ability to make well thought out decisions. The brain is limited in its capacity to handle multitasking, and modern day technology presents challenges the brain has never faced before,” said Dr. Fatima Ali, a psychiatrist with Linden Oaks at Edward and DuPage Mental Health Services.

MEDITATION

If stress has you anxious, tense, and worried, consider trying meditation. Meditation is a state of increased awareness of the present moment. It can create a sense of calm, peace, and balance that benefits both your emotional well-being and your overall health. If you carry yourself more calmly through your day, meditation can even improve certain medical conditions.

LIVE IN THE PRESENT

It’s good to learn from the past and plan for the future. But often we use this to avoid dealing with our present situation in life, which might be overwhelming us. If we never learn to find space in the present, Dr. Ali says we feel constantly overwhelmed, anxious, and feel a sense of being out of control. “This can lead to depression, fatigue, physical symptoms like headaches, backache, insomnia and an inability to enjoy life,” said Dr. Ali.

JUST BREATHE

Learn how to breathe properly and you can reduce mental tension, help to focus your mind, and increase your body’s energy levels by properly oxygenating the blood. Misty Soderholm, owner of SoderWorld Healing Arts Center & Spa in Willowbrook, says proper breathing calms and strengthens the mind, and creates a feeling of inner peace and self-control. If you breathe incorrectly for three minutes, that can lower the amount of oxygen to your brain and heart by 30 percent to 40 percent. This can lead to an increased risk for headaches, high blood pressure, asthma, and chronic fatigue. Soderholm says breathing life into every cell in the body, and letting go of anything that no longer serves you, is an efficient way to create a sacred space for yourself. She calls proper breathing “belly breathing”. “True, full, belly breathing is like imagining your belly like a balloon, and as you inhale, you are filling up that balloon. As you exhale, that balloon is deflating. This allows the lungs to expand to full capacity and bring more oxygen in. If you want to see proper breathing, watch a baby when they are sleeping,” said Soderholm.

TAKE BABY STEPS

At first, try scheduling several five-minute quiet moments spread throughout your day. “You will start to handle situations differently. Things won’t bother you as much as they did before, and you start to listen to your body’s signs and your inner voice,” said Soderholm.

QUIET TIME RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Focus on your breath or a candle flame for five minutes
  • Take a walk in nature and be aware of the beauty around you
  • Take an hour bike ride that feels like five minutes
  • Pray at bedtime
  • Attend a church service
  • Listen to music that evokes a particular emotion for you
  • Take a yoga class
  • Enjoy a silent meal with pure gratitude for its nourishment and flavor

My favorite oil during my times of quiet is sandalwood.

Benefits of a Himalayan Salt Lamp

The Gentle Glow: Benefits of a Himalayan Salt Lamp

There’s something soothing about the soft, warm glow of a Himalayan salt lamp. More than just a beautiful addition to your space, these lamps are believed to offer subtle wellness benefits that support both body and mind. From purifying the air to promoting a sense of calm, they create an atmosphere that feels like a breath of fresh air for your soul.

Himalayan salt lamps are said to release negative ions, which may help counteract the effects of modern life—like screen time, stress, and stagnant energy in our living spaces. Whether you place one in your bedroom for restful sleep or keep one on your desk for focus and clarity, this simple tool can bring a little more peace and balance into your daily routine.

In this post, we’ll explore the many benefits of Himalayan salt lamps and how you can use them to create a cozy, supportive sanctuary at home.

How many of you have Himalayan Salt lamps?

I actually have seven around my house. Not only do I love the warm ambiance their glow creates, but the benefits are so amazing.

Benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps

  • Cleanses & Deodorizes the Air
  • Reduces Allergy & Asthma Symptoms
  • Increases Energy Levels
  • Better Sleep
  • Improves Mood & Concentration
  • Reduces Static Electricity In the Air
  • Neutralizes Electromagnetic Radiation
  • Reduces symptoms of disorders like rheumatism and arthritis
  • Increased relaxation & calmness

How does it work?

WebMD explains some of the benefits of negative ions:

“Generally speaking, negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy,” says Pierce J. Howard, PhD, author of The Owners Manual for the Brain: Everyday Applications from Mind Brain Research and director of research at the Center for Applied Cognitive Sciences in Charlotte, N.C.“They also may protect against germs in the air, resulting in decreased irritation due to inhaling various particles that make you sneeze, cough, or have a throat irritation.”

And for a whopping one in three of us who are sensitive to their effects, negative ions can make us feel like we are walking on air. You are one of them if you feel instantly refreshed the moment you open a window and breathe in fresh, humid air.

Ready to go get one? (Or two, or seven) ? I really like this one.

Essential Oils for Mind and Emotions: Finding Balance Within

Essential Oils for Mind and Emotions: Finding Balance Within

Our mind and emotions are deeply connected, influencing how we move through each moment of life. Some days feel light and easy; others feel heavy or scattered. Essential oils can be beautiful allies on this journey, helping us ground, uplift, and restore harmony when we need it most.

With their calming, energizing, and centering properties, essential oils work on both the physical and energetic levels to support emotional balance and mental clarity. A drop of lavender may quiet a restless mind, while a hint of citrus can awaken joy and creativity. These tiny bottles hold powerful tools for nurturing your inner landscape.

In this post, we’ll explore the best essential oils for supporting your mind and emotions, and share simple ways to use them to invite peace, focus, and emotional resilience into your daily life.

Our Sense of Smell

Your sense of smell is much more accurate than any of your other senses. Your ability to smell comes from sensory cells called Olfactory Sensory Neurons, found in a small patch of tissue very high in your nose. Those cells connect to your brain.

Each of those sensory neurons has one odor receptor – and molecules released by substances around us stimulate these receptors. Once your neurons detect your molecules, they send messages to your limbic lobe of your brain.

Our sense of smell is 10,000 more sensitive than our other senses. Scent travels faster to the brain with smell than it does with sight, or even sound.

The limbic lobe is a group of brain structures that is below the cortex of the brain – it includes the amygdala and the hippocampus. Your limbic lobe (system of brain structures) is directly connected to the parts of your brain that control many aspects of your body – hormone levels, stress, memory, breathing, heart rate, and more.

The only way to stimulate the emotional brain is through your sense of smell – which is one of the reasons why Essential Oils can work so incredibly well. Feelings of depression, fear, anger, happiness, joy and even anxiety all originate from the limbic lobe of the brain.

Essential Oils can help alleviate symptoms at a cellular level through their therapeutic properties–because that stimulation of hormones and chemicals can drastically affect physiology and behavior.

Essential Oils can be stimulating (Peppermint), calming (Lavender), sedative (Cedarwood), balancing (Frankincense, and so much more.

Top Five for Emotions:

Roman Chamomile: Helps support feelings of peace, love and acceptance.

Cedarwood: Helps support healthy focus and encouragement while also grounding.

Lavender: Helps support relaxation and calming. This one also helps with communicating feelings.

Bergamot: Uplifting and will help support healthy confidence levels. This one also helping foster self love and self worth.

Frankincense: Powerful cleanser of the spirit – grounding and can help during times of negativity.

Gratitude Practice

The simple act of writing a gratitude list each day helps people to feel more positive, improves mindset and wellbeing, and brings more joy to life. Positive psychology research from Harvard demonstrated that “gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness”.

Taking time each day to stop, observe, and write out 3 things that you’re grateful for will help your mind to focus on feelings of joy, peace, compassion, love, and forgiveness. When you write a gratitude list every day, you invite more of what you’re grateful for into your life, and you become more aware of the good and the beautiful around you.

Where do you begin?

  • Some people choose to start their day with their list, while others end their day with it. Experiment with both, and see which feels more beneficial for you.
  • Get a special journal that you keep just for your gratitude list. Handwriting your list, rather than typing it on a computer, tells your brain to pay attention.
  • It takes a minimum of 21 days to create a habit, and over two months for that habit to become automatic. In other words, get started, and keep going!

The thoughts in your head are often on repeat from your subconscious mind. Keeping your focus on gratitude will help you to maximize the good in your life and invite more in!

Essential Oils for Adrenal Support: Restoring Energy and Resilience

Essential Oils for Adrenal Support: Restoring Energy and Resilience

Your adrenal glands are small but mighty, working tirelessly to help you respond to stress and keep your energy steady throughout the day. But in our fast-paced world, these little glands can easily become overworked, leaving you feeling drained, foggy, and unable to bounce back like you used to.

Essential oils can be a gentle yet powerful way to support your adrenals. With their calming, grounding, and restorative properties, certain oils help soothe the nervous system, reduce stress, and encourage deep replenishment—giving your body the chance to reset and restore balance.

In this post, we’ll explore the best essential oils for adrenal support and share simple, nourishing ways to weave them into your daily self-care rituals.

Unrelenting stress. Trouble sleeping. Exhaustion. Low libido. Brain fog. Stubborn weight gain. Anxiety or depression… Do these sound familiar?

These don’t have to be your secret struggle anymore ?. You are not alone.

These are all symptoms of hormone imbalance that I hear women describe every single day.

The root cause of many hormone problems is stress and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis deregulation.

Chronic stress created by modern life not only activates the HPA axis (hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis) and turns on our survival system, but brings about the possibility of a vicious cycle of feedback from stress and its damaging effects.

How do we combat this vicious cycle into sympathetic dominance

Fortunately, in nature’s infinite wisdom, there are a number of essential oils that can help you adapt to stress with more grace and ease.

Essential oils stress are powerful response interrupters. Simply breathing in a calming essential oil will actually downregulate the stress response and instantly reduce overwhelm.

Below is my Adrenal Love blend that works effectively at reducing stress in a matter of seconds.

Adrenal Love Rollerblend

  • 8 drops Geranium
  • 5 drops Rosemary
  • 5 drops Clove
  • 3 drops Peppermint

Directions:

Add essential oils to a10ml rollerball. Top off with Fractionated Coconut Oil.
Roll the blend over your pulse points, palms, adrenals and back of neck.

To experience instant relief from stress, roll the blend over your palm and take 3-5 deep breathes so that the aroma goes straight to the limbic brain and calms down the amygdala.
