The Practice of Intentions

You have probably heard about intentions, right?  Especially at the beginning of a new year, it is quite the buzz.  I am all for people setting new year goals, visions, intentions, or whatever you want to call them, but I am talking more about a daily focus on something you want to create in your life.

Over the years I have worked with intentions and affirmation on a daily basis. I have seen first hand when they work, and when they do not work.  They work when you truly feel what you are saying, when you visualize it often to the details,  and the same holds true when they don’t work.  Feeling it is key. You can’t expect results just by just repeating it. The more you speak it, the more you feel it, the more you feel it, the more you speak it, and the cycle continues.

Positive affirmations require a consistent and regular practice if you want to make lasting, long-term changes.

The good news is that the practice and popularity of positive affirmations are based on widely accepted and well-established psychological theory, –yes, science backs up the new agey, hippie feel-good vibes. Pretty amazing, right?

Practicing positive affirmations can be extremely simple.  You pick a statement that is positive and you repeat to yourself.  Over and over.  You write it down. You sit with it.  You believe it. You can also try this awesome meditation called Japa meditation using mala beads.

You can choose intentions to motivate you, encourage positive things in your life, or even boost your self-esteem. The subconscious patterns of negative self-talk can be eliminated by a regular positive affirmation or intention practice.

Here are the steps I follow to living my intention with affirmations:

  1. Get clear. Sit quietly without distractions and think of one (or two) areas in your life that you would like to be different. Some ideas include generating more income, finding true love in a partner, having a healthier body, or increasing self-esteem. I also love to use lime and rosemary essential oil when getting clear.  These two essential oils are powerful when it comes to the brain and can bring a sense of focus and inner knowledge.
  2. Create a powerful statement. Whatever you choose, having a very clear and deliberate statement, preferably spoken in the terms of I AM_____ (healthy, abundant, happily in love with a loving partner, surrounded by supportive friends, confident and strong). The two most powerful words in any language is I AM, so start by speaking in those terms versus I want, or I need.  I AM is ownership.
  3. Incorporate your intention into your daily life. Write down your affirmation and put it in a place where you will see it often.  Or even better, invest in sticky notes and put throughout your home. Mirrors, refrigerators, planners, cabinets, your car, etc. are great places.  I also like to may a simple photo and make it my wallpaper on my phone.
  4. Affirmations as a practice. Recording your voice on your phone and listening to yourself speak the affirmation is a great way to reinforce your intention. There are also some awesome apps you can get on your phone that remind you throughout the day to pause and listen to your affirmations.  Setting aside five minutes each morning to get still, quiet, and then repeat them in your meditation practice is also wonderful. If you want to incorporate the mantra/affirmation into your japa meditation practice, this can be incredibly powerful as well.  Basically, find a way that works for you to repeat the affirmations as often as you can.
  5. Be deliberate with your actions. Setting an intention is an amazing way to create the life you want, and deserve, but sitting back and expecting the Universe to plop it into your lap is a set up for a big-time disappointment. Manifesting and creating also take effort on your part.  Let’s say you want a healthy body.  Speaking about it but continuing to be a couch potato and indulging on cheeto’s probably isn’t going to make that happen.  Expecting or desiring to have a steady source of income while absorbing yourself in leisure activities (TV, video games, reading novels, going fishing), isn’t going to make a lot of financial deposits. The truth is, whatever you desire in your life,  you first have to FEEL you deserve it so begin sort through those common feelings of not being enough now because it’s blocking your flow, FEEL it in every cell of your being when you speak it as if it has already happened, and FEEL so strongly about it that you begin to take mindful and deliberate actions steps towards making it happen.  That is what we know as co-creating.
  6. Gratitude. Without a solid a practice of gratitude all the affirmations in the world aren’t going to make a difference. And by solid, I mean a deliberate and consistent sitting down and acknowledging all the good in your life. Remember, what you focus on is what you’re inviting in. So, the more you focus on your abundance the more you will have. So simple.

Now, it is time to get busy. What do you want to create?

When a person really desires something all the universe conspires to help that person to realize his dream.

Home Yoga Practice

One of the most common things I hear from people who really want to start yoga is that they feel they have no discipline when it comes to a home practice. Believe me, I get it. I have struggled my whole time as a yogi and yoga teacher to have a consistent home practice. It seems we can come up with a zillion reasons/excuses as to why it’s impossible–no real place to practice, too many distractions, no privacy, and most common is lack of motivation.

Truth is all of those things can be overcome with some simple steps to hold yourself accountable.

After all, we all know how valuable a consistent yoga and meditation practice is, otherwise we wouldn’t be dying to get back to the studio for the classes that were on the schedule, right? Many of us are now working from home and our practice is suffering when instead, there are a few simple things to do to get back to the mat, at home.

Here are five ways to overcome the excuses and develop a solid home practice.

  1. Set a schedule. If you are used to heading to the gym or studio for a Tuesday morning yoga class at 10am, then carve out the same time slot. Block it out in your calendar, set a timer, tell your family that hour is off-limits, and stick to it. Show up on time just as you would for the class at the gym but without the commute! Try for twice a week and watch what begins to happen.
  2. Choose a space. Let’s face it, not everyone is going to have a perfectly zen area in their home dedicated to yoga. No worries! You just need a space that is open enough to feel comfortable on your mat and perhaps a door to close. Light a candle, burn some incense or diffuse your favorite essential oils, and unroll your mat. Keep this space free of clutter, work items, and household chores like laundry to fold. Create a place that feels good, but let go of the idea that in order to practice it has to be perfect.
  3. Set boundaries. I love that yoga is called a practice because it truly does help us to see how we can apply the things we learn on the mat to our everyday life. Like boundaries. Decide first and foremost that you are worth it and then let your family know that you are giving yourself one precious hour. Feed your dogs and cats prior to practice and lock them out of the space or put them in a kennel–they will survive an hour without you. Turn off your phone. Yes, turn OFF your phone. If these things are hard for you, then revisit your worthiness and try again.
  4. Commit. Remember the first few times after you started to “get” this practice? You know, when your mind and your body came together into harmony and you started to feel something shift? Revisit that. Feel it. Does it really take a class on a schedule, in a germy gym with a bunch of strangers to motivate you? How about instead the physical health that you are developing? The reduction of stress your body is receiving? The peaceful state of being that your spirit feels? That should be plenty of motivation.
  5. It’s a practice. Remember, yoga is a practice not a perfection. Give your self some grace and try again. Any habit takes time to develop. Some say a new habit takes 21 days. How about trying 4-weeks of coming to the mat twice a week and see if you don’t develop a solid home practice that is based on self-love and cultivating a sense of self without the need to leave the sanctuary of your home.

The added bonus to all of this is that you will teach others around you the value of self-love and they just might see the peacefulness in you and make some changes themselves. It is after all a practice for the self, but it becomes selfless in how it enhances the lives of others as well. That is the ripple effect that we love to discover while on the mat.

The Power of Stress Reduction: Creating Space for Calm and Healing

The Power of Stress Reduction: Creating Space for Calm and Healing

In today’s fast-paced world, stress can feel like an unavoidable companion—one that quietly weaves its way into our thoughts, bodies, and even our sleep. While a little stress can sometimes motivate us, too much over time can leave us feeling depleted, anxious, and out of balance. That’s why learning to reduce and manage stress isn’t just a luxury—it’s an essential part of caring for your whole self.

When we take time to slow down and soothe our nervous system, we create space for our body to heal, our mind to clear, and our emotions to settle. Stress reduction practices like mindful breathing, gentle movement, and even the calming scents of essential oils remind us that peace is possible—even in the midst of a busy life.

In this post, we’ll explore why stress reduction is so important and share simple, nourishing ways to invite calm and resilience into your daily rhythm.

Do you ever feel like there’s just too much on your plate, or not enough hours in the day? If you rush through your day, it can be bad for your health. Medical experts say that more than 75 percent of diseases and disorders are related to stress. If you can learn to turn your stress level down a notch, your body will thank you. The people around you might thank you as well.

QUIET TIME… YOUR BODY NEEDS IT

If you can learn to quiet your mind, it helps recharge your emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Otherwise, we are constantly reacting instead of reflecting. “This can hinder our ability to make well thought out decisions. The brain is limited in its capacity to handle multitasking, and modern day technology presents challenges the brain has never faced before,” said Dr. Fatima Ali, a psychiatrist with Linden Oaks at Edward and DuPage Mental Health Services.

MEDITATION

If stress has you anxious, tense, and worried, consider trying meditation. Meditation is a state of increased awareness of the present moment. It can create a sense of calm, peace, and balance that benefits both your emotional well-being and your overall health. If you carry yourself more calmly through your day, meditation can even improve certain medical conditions.

LIVE IN THE PRESENT

It’s good to learn from the past and plan for the future. But often we use this to avoid dealing with our present situation in life, which might be overwhelming us. If we never learn to find space in the present, Dr. Ali says we feel constantly overwhelmed, anxious, and feel a sense of being out of control. “This can lead to depression, fatigue, physical symptoms like headaches, backache, insomnia and an inability to enjoy life,” said Dr. Ali.

JUST BREATHE

Learn how to breathe properly and you can reduce mental tension, help to focus your mind, and increase your body’s energy levels by properly oxygenating the blood. Misty Soderholm, owner of SoderWorld Healing Arts Center & Spa in Willowbrook, says proper breathing calms and strengthens the mind, and creates a feeling of inner peace and self-control. If you breathe incorrectly for three minutes, that can lower the amount of oxygen to your brain and heart by 30 percent to 40 percent. This can lead to an increased risk for headaches, high blood pressure, asthma, and chronic fatigue. Soderholm says breathing life into every cell in the body, and letting go of anything that no longer serves you, is an efficient way to create a sacred space for yourself. She calls proper breathing “belly breathing”. “True, full, belly breathing is like imagining your belly like a balloon, and as you inhale, you are filling up that balloon. As you exhale, that balloon is deflating. This allows the lungs to expand to full capacity and bring more oxygen in. If you want to see proper breathing, watch a baby when they are sleeping,” said Soderholm.

TAKE BABY STEPS

At first, try scheduling several five-minute quiet moments spread throughout your day. “You will start to handle situations differently. Things won’t bother you as much as they did before, and you start to listen to your body’s signs and your inner voice,” said Soderholm.

QUIET TIME RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Focus on your breath or a candle flame for five minutes
  • Take a walk in nature and be aware of the beauty around you
  • Take an hour bike ride that feels like five minutes
  • Pray at bedtime
  • Attend a church service
  • Listen to music that evokes a particular emotion for you
  • Take a yoga class
  • Enjoy a silent meal with pure gratitude for its nourishment and flavor

My favorite oil during my times of quiet is sandalwood.

Gratitude Practice

The simple act of writing a gratitude list each day helps people to feel more positive, improves mindset and wellbeing, and brings more joy to life. Positive psychology research from Harvard demonstrated that “gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness”.

Taking time each day to stop, observe, and write out 3 things that you’re grateful for will help your mind to focus on feelings of joy, peace, compassion, love, and forgiveness. When you write a gratitude list every day, you invite more of what you’re grateful for into your life, and you become more aware of the good and the beautiful around you.

Where do you begin?

  • Some people choose to start their day with their list, while others end their day with it. Experiment with both, and see which feels more beneficial for you.
  • Get a special journal that you keep just for your gratitude list. Handwriting your list, rather than typing it on a computer, tells your brain to pay attention.
  • It takes a minimum of 21 days to create a habit, and over two months for that habit to become automatic. In other words, get started, and keep going!

The thoughts in your head are often on repeat from your subconscious mind. Keeping your focus on gratitude will help you to maximize the good in your life and invite more in!

The Importance of Sleep: Nourishment for Body, Mind, and Spirit

The Importance of Sleep: Nourishment for Body, Mind, and Spirit

In a world that celebrates doing more and moving faster, sleep often gets pushed to the side. Yet true rest is one of the most powerful forms of self-care we can give ourselves. Sleep is when the body repairs, the mind resets, and the spirit restores its balance. It’s not a luxury—it’s a necessity for vibrant health and emotional well-being.

When we sleep well, everything feels a little easier. Our mood lifts, our energy flows, and our body functions as it was designed to. But when sleep is disrupted or neglected, we may feel foggy, anxious, or disconnected from ourselves.

In this post, we’ll explore why sleep matters so deeply, what happens during those precious hours of rest, and simple ways to create a bedtime ritual that supports your body and soul.

I am a believer in early to bed early to rise! I typically go to bed by 830, read for awhile (okay… a sentence or two) and wake around 5am. That is 8.5 glorious hours of rest. This is a perfect night. There are some nights my mind or my body is racing and I can’t fall asleep.

In my diffuser next to my bed is usually cedarwood, lavender and orange. Sometimes I toss in vetiver and serenity. Sometimes I go with a simple lavender. I also apply a sleepy blend to my feet and heart and it is: roman chamomile, lavender, orange, vetiver and FCO in a roller.

Everyone knows that diet and exercise are key components of any healthy lifestyle. Another key pillar of health, equally important and arguably even more so, is sleep. Although the amount of sleep a person needs varies, experts recommend that adults get at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night. Unfortunately, about 33 percent of Americans are not getting the recommend amount of sleep per night.

Why Is Sleep So Important?

Sleep doesn’t exist to just pass time or to keep us from working 24 hours a day. Sleep is important because it is inherently physically and mentally healing, and it allows for our bodies to not only recoup from the stress of everyday life, but also to recharge and refocus. Depriving your body of sleep has been associated with many health risks and places a tremendous burden on virtually every organ system in your body. Lack of adequate sleep affects our ability to lose, or maintain, a healthy weight; influences how we feel, learn, and behave; and negatively impacts our cardiovascular health and overall wellbeing.

So What Can I Do About It?

Of course, life will always find a way to present obstacles that are out of our control, from a sick child to a last minute work project to a neighbor in need. Each of these will undoubtedly affect how we sleep. However, we must focus on what we can control, and fortunately there are several tips and techniques that you can apply to help ensure you are not only getting enough sleep but also getting quality sleep.

Tips for a Better Night’s Sleep

*Eat Well and Maintain a Healthy Exercise Routine – Eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise keeps our weight in check, but it also helps with sleep. Eating high carbohydrate foods floods the muscles with glucose, causing involuntary muscle movements during sleep, which disrupts rest. Exercising too close to bedtime ramps up metabolism and body temperature and can make it difficult to fall asleep.

*Maintain a Rhythm – Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule, going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time. Creating this rhythm helps regulate your body’s internal clock and may help you sleep better.

*Just Say No to Alcohol, Caffeine, Nicotine, & Electronics-
All of these can make going to sleep difficult. Don’t drink alcohol or caffeinated drinks too close to bedtime. Remove all electronics from the bedroom, including TVs, computers, and other electronic devices. Darkness will help your body begin producing melatonin, a hormone that naturally regulates sleep.

*Keep Cool Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, dark, and relaxing environment, which is neither too hot, nor too cold. Your bed and pillows should be supportive, yet comfortable. If you experience shoulder, hip, or back pain in the morning, you can be sure you did not rest as well as you could have. It may be time for new bedding.

*Wind Down – Your body needs time to shift into sleep mode, so spend the last hour before bed doing a calming activity such as reading or taking a warm bath. Certain drinks, such as chamomile tea, may be relaxing and non-stimulating.

*Use Calming Essential Oils – Essential oils like Lavender and Bergamot are rich in linalool and linalyl acetate, compounds that have well-known relaxing properties. These oils can be diffused aromatically in the bedroom to create a calming and peaceful environment, perfect for getting a good night’s sleep. They can also be used topically and taken internally to calm the nervous system, promote relaxation, and lead to a restful sleep.

Santosha: The Path to Contentment

Contentment is defined as a state of happiness and satisfaction.

Emotionally it is in the middle of the emotional scale and vibrates at a fairly neutral resonance. It is that space within us where all is okay. It is a feeling that offers neutrality and a sense of ease because there is not the push for more.

When I first began to understand what it meant to live yoga, I wondered if I could I ever really achieve contentment?  The Sanksrit word for contentment is santosha which means to cultivate a sense of being all right with who I am and what I have. And yet, we are humans who have been conditioned to constantly crave and strive for more. Yogi or not, I have dreams and goals so contentment, or santosha, often eludes me. Both on the mat and off the mat.

My work is to balance my dreams with the presence of knowing that all is okay.  I mean REALLY knowing that all is okay.  I can still have my dreams, but right now, in this breath, all is okay.

When we look at this on an emotional level, we see just underneath contentment on the emotional scale is complacency.  And just above it is hope.  So this middle ground of contentment could take you either way, depending on your awareness and your willingness to be, or not to be.

In my life, when faced with a challenge (on the mat or off),  I have three choices.

  1. Stay in contentment. I could recognize that my true self is pure and perfect. I can know that I am whole and good enough, right now.
  2. Slip into complacency. I could get lazy in my efforts and desires.  I could choose to weaken my desires and make excuses as to why it is not worth the effort due to my smugness and perhaps falsely known self-satisfaction.
  3. Rise into hope. I could take a breath and aim for a feeling of expectation and desire for goodness to happen.  I could take in the knowing that dreams and desires are right there waiting to arrive.

I  definitely do not spend much time in complacency. Although I am often vibrating higher in hope, optimism, positive expectation, enthusiasm, passion and ultimately deep appreciation, I am striving to also exist in the space of contentment.

Preparing the Soil

I think of early March as a time to prepare for growth. To toil the ground and prepare ourselves for deep growth.  I also love spring and the symbolism it represents.  It is during the spring time that we often think of beginnings, newness, and growth.  For some, this is a great time to begin to cultivate your “soil” to soon plant seeds of intention. One way to do this is to write down anything in your life you wish to increase–friendships, health, abundance or joy, are just a few ideas.  Be clear with your visions as this brings life to your “seeds”.

Next, it is so important to prepare your inner “soil” by eliminating and removing the old and now transpired blossoms of last year.  The memories of past that have come and go and no longer as vibrant as they were just a few short months ago. When we invest time in preparing ourselves for a season of growth (no matter what time of year, really) we must start with cleaning up the areas so that we are open to allow space for growth. When we spend time doing this we are investing time into right now.  We are dirtying our hands with the fertile soil that awaits.

As you do this, become aware of the subtle changes in Nature during this time of the year.  You might see the peeking of crocus bulbs emerging from the hardened winter ground.  Watch as the trees begin to grow tiny nubs that will soon break into full leaves.  Listen as the birds start to make song in the early mornings and the air has a scent of newness.  Use all of your senses to experience what is happening around you.

As we connect with Nature we also connect with ourselves. We realize that we too, are ever-changing and growing beings.  We can set the seeds of intention and begin to nurture and cultivate what we wish to have grown in our lives.

This month in my classes we will be exploring cleansing postures to eliminate the old and make space for new.  We will also be looking at ways our bodies can twist and unwind to come fully into the now.

Here is to growing, less pain, more joy and flourishing!  Happy Spring and while you are preparing your soul for growth it is never a bad idea to get your hands dirty in Mother Earth, either.

Learn more about this powerful process in this short video!

Cooling Balance: An Essential Oil Blend for Pitta Dosha

Cooling Balance: An Essential Oil Blend for Pitta Dosha

Pitta dosha, governed by the elements of fire and water, gives us drive, focus, and a passionate zest for life. But when Pitta becomes excessive—especially in the heat of summer or during stressful times—it can lead to irritability, impatience, and an overheated body and mind.

This calming essential oil blend is designed to soothe and balance Pitta’s fiery energy. With cooling, sweet, and grounding aromas, it helps you restore inner harmony, release tension, and invite a sense of ease and flow. Perfect for moments when you need to cool the flames and reconnect with your natural state of balance.

I finally figured out why I have so much heat (inflammation) in my body. I have a really hard time this time of year and I remembered a few days ago that historically the time that is summer turning to fall is sooooo hard on me because of my Ayurvedic dosha Pitta. (Ayurveda is the sister science to yoga that looks at body constitution). I seem to burning on fire inside and outside, and interestingly bugs and insects are obsessed with me.  They must sense my inner fire and want some.

The last few weeks have been really hard with a constant inner burning.  My joints are on fire, my belly is boiling, I have a burning in my stomach no matter what I eat, my temper is a tiny bit shorter and I am overall just hot.

I have started to implement eating more cucumbers, taking cooler showers and baths, drinking cool water, spending time with blues and greens, meditating on cool water imagery and just doing what I know to do. I also created a lovely and pitta-dosha calming blend—it’s all the lovely cool florals; rose, jasmine, neroli, lavender, helichrysum, geranium and sandalwood. Plus, I added some peppermint for a topical cooling sensation. I added turquoise to amplify it’s cooling properties and bring in the cool vibes of turquoise.  I apply this to my neck, chest and spine a few times a day.

If you’d like to know more about your dosha, let’s chat. I have some great resources and can do a quick assessment. Also, be sure to check out this free ebook for reference to essential oils.
