Honoring the Winter Solstice: A Time for Stillness and Renewal

“I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars.”

Honoring the Winter Solstice: A Time for Stillness and Renewal

The Winter Solstice marks the longest night of the year, a sacred pause where nature invites us to slow down, turn inward, and embrace the quiet beauty of the season. As the earth tilts gently toward the returning light, we’re reminded that even in the darkest moments, new beginnings are quietly stirring beneath the surface.

This is a time for reflection, releasing what no longer serves us, and planting seeds of intention for the months ahead. By aligning with the rhythm of the solstice, we can create space for rest, renewal, and the soft whispers of our inner wisdom.

In this post, we’ll explore simple and meaningful ways to honor the Winter Solstice—through rituals, mindful practices, and gentle moments of self-care to nourish your body, mind, and spirit as you welcome the return of the light.

In yoga, and in astrology, the sun symbolizes the soul. The word “solstice,” in Latin, means sun standing still, so in a sense, we could say the soul stands still on the solstice—maybe even long enough for you to catch a glimpse of it, as some legends say you can at this divine time of year. The darkest night contains the most magnetic power, too; this is a time to draw forth what you want, to incubate your best intentions. As you enjoy the longest night and the brightest lights of the season, please remember this: your soul is the light of the world. You carry the light within you. You shine.

The Solstice is a time of quietude, of firelight, and dreaming, when seeds germinate in the cold earth, and the cold notes of church bells mingle with the chimes of icicles. Rivers are stilled and the land lies waiting beneath a coverlet of snow. We watch the cold sunlight and the bright stars, maybe go for walks in the quiet land. . . . All around us the season seems to reach a standstill — a point of repose.

These longer hours of darkness allows us to see into the deepest and darkest parts of our soul and presents us with an opportunity to go within and become aware of the subtle stirrings within our beings.

Winter darkness has a positive side to it. As we gather to celebrate the first turn from winter to spring, we are invited to recognize and honor the beauty in the often unwanted season of winter. Let us invite our hearts to be glad for the courage winter proclaims. Let us be grateful for the wisdom winter brings in teaching us about the need for withdrawal as an essential part of renewal. Let us also encourage our spirits as Earth prepares to come forth from this time of withdrawal into a season filled with light.

The winter solstice celebrates the return of hope to our land as our planet experiences the first slow turn toward greater daylight. Soon we will welcome the return of the sun and the coming of springtime. As we do so, let us remember and embrace the positive, enriching aspects of winter’s darkness. Pause now to sit in silence in the darkness of this space. Let this space be a safe enclosure of creative gestation for you.

With their ability to stimulate circulation, soothe the scalp, and strengthen hair follicles, certain essential oils have been used for centuries to promote healthy hair growth. I have never in my life had long hair! My mom was a hairdresser and that meant I had short hair always, AND perms! Ack! I think my first perm was when I was four years old! And, I have really red hair so it’s no wonder I didn’t have a date until I was like 35….kidding, but still.

I have been growing my hair out for some time. I decided a couple of years ago that I want to turn 50 with long, beautiful red hair. I wont say my hair is long, but it is much healthier and happier. Plus, this smells so good.

In a 2oz spray bottle:

  • 10 drops cedarwood
  • 10 drops geranium
  • 10 drops peppermint
  • 10 drops Clary Sage
  • 10 drops rosemary
  • 1oz witch hazel, top off with water.

Spray your hair once or twice a day!

Essential Oils for Mind and Emotions: Finding Balance Within

Essential Oils for Mind and Emotions: Finding Balance Within

Our mind and emotions are deeply connected, influencing how we move through each moment of life. Some days feel light and easy; others feel heavy or scattered. Essential oils can be beautiful allies on this journey, helping us ground, uplift, and restore harmony when we need it most.

With their calming, energizing, and centering properties, essential oils work on both the physical and energetic levels to support emotional balance and mental clarity. A drop of lavender may quiet a restless mind, while a hint of citrus can awaken joy and creativity. These tiny bottles hold powerful tools for nurturing your inner landscape.

In this post, we’ll explore the best essential oils for supporting your mind and emotions, and share simple ways to use them to invite peace, focus, and emotional resilience into your daily life.

Our Sense of Smell

Your sense of smell is much more accurate than any of your other senses. Your ability to smell comes from sensory cells called Olfactory Sensory Neurons, found in a small patch of tissue very high in your nose. Those cells connect to your brain.

Each of those sensory neurons has one odor receptor – and molecules released by substances around us stimulate these receptors. Once your neurons detect your molecules, they send messages to your limbic lobe of your brain.

Our sense of smell is 10,000 more sensitive than our other senses. Scent travels faster to the brain with smell than it does with sight, or even sound.

The limbic lobe is a group of brain structures that is below the cortex of the brain – it includes the amygdala and the hippocampus. Your limbic lobe (system of brain structures) is directly connected to the parts of your brain that control many aspects of your body – hormone levels, stress, memory, breathing, heart rate, and more.

The only way to stimulate the emotional brain is through your sense of smell – which is one of the reasons why Essential Oils can work so incredibly well. Feelings of depression, fear, anger, happiness, joy and even anxiety all originate from the limbic lobe of the brain.

Essential Oils can help alleviate symptoms at a cellular level through their therapeutic properties–because that stimulation of hormones and chemicals can drastically affect physiology and behavior.

Essential Oils can be stimulating (Peppermint), calming (Lavender), sedative (Cedarwood), balancing (Frankincense, and so much more.

Gratitude Practice

The simple act of writing a gratitude list each day helps people to feel more positive, improves mindset and wellbeing, and brings more joy to life. Positive psychology research from Harvard demonstrated that “gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness”.

Taking time each day to stop, observe, and write out 3 things that you’re grateful for will help your mind to focus on feelings of joy, peace, compassion, love, and forgiveness. When you write a gratitude list every day, you invite more of what you’re grateful for into your life, and you become more aware of the good and the beautiful around you.

Where do you begin?

  • Some people choose to start their day with their list, while others end their day with it. Experiment with both, and see which feels more beneficial for you.
  • Get a special journal that you keep just for your gratitude list. Handwriting your list, rather than typing it on a computer, tells your brain to pay attention.
  • It takes a minimum of 21 days to create a habit, and over two months for that habit to become automatic. In other words, get started, and keep going!

The thoughts in your head are often on repeat from your subconscious mind. Keeping your focus on gratitude will help you to maximize the good in your life and invite more in!

The Importance of Sleep: Nourishment for Body, Mind, and Spirit

The Importance of Sleep: Nourishment for Body, Mind, and Spirit

In a world that celebrates doing more and moving faster, sleep often gets pushed to the side. Yet true rest is one of the most powerful forms of self-care we can give ourselves. Sleep is when the body repairs, the mind resets, and the spirit restores its balance. It’s not a luxury—it’s a necessity for vibrant health and emotional well-being.

When we sleep well, everything feels a little easier. Our mood lifts, our energy flows, and our body functions as it was designed to. But when sleep is disrupted or neglected, we may feel foggy, anxious, or disconnected from ourselves.

In this post, we’ll explore why sleep matters so deeply, what happens during those precious hours of rest, and simple ways to create a bedtime ritual that supports your body and soul.

I am a believer in early to bed early to rise! I typically go to bed by 830, read for awhile (okay… a sentence or two) and wake around 5am. That is 8.5 glorious hours of rest. This is a perfect night. There are some nights my mind or my body is racing and I can’t fall asleep.

In my diffuser next to my bed is usually cedarwood, lavender and orange. Sometimes I toss in vetiver and serenity. Sometimes I go with a simple lavender. I also apply a sleepy blend to my feet and heart and it is: roman chamomile, lavender, orange, vetiver and FCO in a roller.

Everyone knows that diet and exercise are key components of any healthy lifestyle. Another key pillar of health, equally important and arguably even more so, is sleep. Although the amount of sleep a person needs varies, experts recommend that adults get at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night. Unfortunately, about 33 percent of Americans are not getting the recommend amount of sleep per night.

Why Is Sleep So Important?

Sleep doesn’t exist to just pass time or to keep us from working 24 hours a day. Sleep is important because it is inherently physically and mentally healing, and it allows for our bodies to not only recoup from the stress of everyday life, but also to recharge and refocus. Depriving your body of sleep has been associated with many health risks and places a tremendous burden on virtually every organ system in your body. Lack of adequate sleep affects our ability to lose, or maintain, a healthy weight; influences how we feel, learn, and behave; and negatively impacts our cardiovascular health and overall wellbeing.

So What Can I Do About It?

Of course, life will always find a way to present obstacles that are out of our control, from a sick child to a last minute work project to a neighbor in need. Each of these will undoubtedly affect how we sleep. However, we must focus on what we can control, and fortunately there are several tips and techniques that you can apply to help ensure you are not only getting enough sleep but also getting quality sleep.

Tips for a Better Night’s Sleep

*Eat Well and Maintain a Healthy Exercise Routine – Eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise keeps our weight in check, but it also helps with sleep. Eating high carbohydrate foods floods the muscles with glucose, causing involuntary muscle movements during sleep, which disrupts rest. Exercising too close to bedtime ramps up metabolism and body temperature and can make it difficult to fall asleep.

*Maintain a Rhythm – Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule, going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time. Creating this rhythm helps regulate your body’s internal clock and may help you sleep better.

*Just Say No to Alcohol, Caffeine, Nicotine, & Electronics-
All of these can make going to sleep difficult. Don’t drink alcohol or caffeinated drinks too close to bedtime. Remove all electronics from the bedroom, including TVs, computers, and other electronic devices. Darkness will help your body begin producing melatonin, a hormone that naturally regulates sleep.

*Keep Cool Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, dark, and relaxing environment, which is neither too hot, nor too cold. Your bed and pillows should be supportive, yet comfortable. If you experience shoulder, hip, or back pain in the morning, you can be sure you did not rest as well as you could have. It may be time for new bedding.

*Wind Down – Your body needs time to shift into sleep mode, so spend the last hour before bed doing a calming activity such as reading or taking a warm bath. Certain drinks, such as chamomile tea, may be relaxing and non-stimulating.

*Use Calming Essential Oils – Essential oils like Lavender and Bergamot are rich in linalool and linalyl acetate, compounds that have well-known relaxing properties. These oils can be diffused aromatically in the bedroom to create a calming and peaceful environment, perfect for getting a good night’s sleep. They can also be used topically and taken internally to calm the nervous system, promote relaxation, and lead to a restful sleep.

Freedom

We have all heard of the metaphors of feeling stuck in a cage and not able to be free to fly, or the imprisoning walls that have been built around us. The brick and mortar is often what we place around ourselves that create our own version of prison.  These can include negativity, questions of worthiness, regrets of the past and worries of the future. Similarly the key to the cage that we so often feel trapped in resides in our own hands. It is our choice to stay in the cage or take the key and unlock it.  No matter what circumstance we are in, we ultimately have choice in what we do with it.

We are not our circumstances, instead we are our possibilities.

As I was planning this month’s classes around the concept of freedom and being liberated, I received a message from a dear friend whose young daughter was just diagnosed with autism. Heartbreaking as those initial words were, I saw within a few short days a woman take on this experience like that of a true champion.  Sure, she cried her eyes out and felt fear for the unknown.  We all do when we hear those words.  The first thing I did was send her the Welcome to Holland Poem.  Then we talked awhile about what may lie ahead as she leaned on my experience to help her navigate the first few steps on this new and scary journey. Then she got busy.

She certainly could have felt like this news was a giant reason to give up and stay stuck.  Many do.  She however, in her warrior spirit, immediately saw a need to advocate and start asking questions about services and community integration for her sweet little girl.  She took this as a chance to make a difference in the lives of her daughter and others.

That is what freedom is.

Freedom is defined as the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. My friend refuses to feel imprisoned by this diagnosis and she will use the power of her light to act and speak without restraint.

This is just one of a million examples of how we can feel stuck, trapped, locked in, or caged.  Whether it is a relationship, a job, a location or a belief you have about yourself, WE have the power to act, speak and think without restraint and hindrance.  We are in control of what we do with our circumstances.

Do you feel imprisoned?  Are you the one laying the bricks down and filling them with mortar?  Do you hold the key in your hand and refuse to unlock the door?

What would freedom feel like? This month we are going to chisel away the beliefs and fear that build a wall around ourselves.  We are going to slip the key into the lock and learn to fly. We are going to feel free.

Santosha: The Path to Contentment

Contentment is defined as a state of happiness and satisfaction.

Emotionally it is in the middle of the emotional scale and vibrates at a fairly neutral resonance. It is that space within us where all is okay. It is a feeling that offers neutrality and a sense of ease because there is not the push for more.

When I first began to understand what it meant to live yoga, I wondered if I could I ever really achieve contentment?  The Sanksrit word for contentment is santosha which means to cultivate a sense of being all right with who I am and what I have. And yet, we are humans who have been conditioned to constantly crave and strive for more. Yogi or not, I have dreams and goals so contentment, or santosha, often eludes me. Both on the mat and off the mat.

My work is to balance my dreams with the presence of knowing that all is okay.  I mean REALLY knowing that all is okay.  I can still have my dreams, but right now, in this breath, all is okay.

When we look at this on an emotional level, we see just underneath contentment on the emotional scale is complacency.  And just above it is hope.  So this middle ground of contentment could take you either way, depending on your awareness and your willingness to be, or not to be.

In my life, when faced with a challenge (on the mat or off),  I have three choices.

  1. Stay in contentment. I could recognize that my true self is pure and perfect. I can know that I am whole and good enough, right now.
  2. Slip into complacency. I could get lazy in my efforts and desires.  I could choose to weaken my desires and make excuses as to why it is not worth the effort due to my smugness and perhaps falsely known self-satisfaction.
  3. Rise into hope. I could take a breath and aim for a feeling of expectation and desire for goodness to happen.  I could take in the knowing that dreams and desires are right there waiting to arrive.

I  definitely do not spend much time in complacency. Although I am often vibrating higher in hope, optimism, positive expectation, enthusiasm, passion and ultimately deep appreciation, I am striving to also exist in the space of contentment.
