Applying Essential Oils

When I first started using essential oils, I mostly used a diffuser or I would slap the oils on my body with random intent.  I liked how good the essential oils made my house smell, and I loved the aromatherapeutic benefits I was experiencing, like lavender helping me sleep better at night, or peppermint helping soothe a headache. I loved how my body smelled, also. At that time, I had no idea that there are benefits to using essentials in a physical well-being way. Once I dug deeper into the natural world and had been using essential oils over time I learned that it is beneficial to apply essential oils directly on the body, like when trying to ease an upset stomach or when treating thinning hair. Once I realized that plant medicine came long before drug-store medicine I was hooked on learning more. I got a giant resource book and began learning everything I could and started to swap out over the counter stuff for these precious little plants.

I needed to learn when to put essential oils on the body, where to apply them, and how to dilute oils properly so they are effective without causing harm. I committed to learning about essential oils much like a person grabs a cookbook and learns how to cook. In time, it became intuitive, much like cooking.

Where Is the Best Place on the Body to Apply Essential Oils?

There is no single perfect place on the body to apply essential oils.

  • If it’s a localized issue like stomachache or sore muscles, then apply the essential oils directly to the part of the body where the issue is occurring.
  • However, if it’s a more generalized issue like lack of focus, trouble sleeping, or anxiety, then apply essential oils at your pulse points: wrists, temples, behind the ears, neck, chest, or inner elbow.  Pulse points are the parts of the body where major arteries run closest to the skin. Applying essential oils at pulse points gets the essential oils into the bloodstream the fastest, and you start feeling the benefits of the essential oils sooner.  This is because pulse points of the body are like roots of a plant.  When feeding or watering a plant, you target the roots because that is where the plant absorbs nutrients and distributes them to the rest of the plant.

If you’ve been researching aromatherapy, you might have come across pulse points. These are places on the body that provide a direct route for essential oils to access your bloodstream and, in turn, your brain.

Pulse points in aromatherapy refer to a few specific locations on the body where major arteries run closest to the surface of the skin. This means that anything applied to the skin at these points diffuses more quickly into the bloodstream than anywhere else.

So, if you’re planning to apply essential oils topically, it’s best to do so at one of your pulse points.

How Do You Apply Essential Oils Directly to the Skin?

When applying essential oils topically to skin, always dilute them with a carrier oil ( coconut oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba, or olive oil).  Essential oils are very powerful, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. My favorite carrier oil is generally fractionated coconut oil, but for my face I love rosehip oil. Recently I had a horrific stomach bug and in my desperation for relief I was dumping oils straight on my skin and I sure paid the price. On day two of the stomach bug, my belly had broke out in a horrible rash. So, USE a carrier! Believe me, I know this and I still screw up.

I came across this chart and it is a must have.

Using essential oils with intention has been a part of my practice (aside from the desperate stomach bug mishap) for many years. I try to tune into what my body is wanting to feel, and then choose the plants accordingly. Once you have a general idea of which essential oils support which area of our body then we can choose which oils more deliberately. You grab the essential oil that most closely fits what you are wanting to feel and then apply!

Aromatherapy: Air-X Essential Oil Blend

If you could bottle up a crisp, sunny morning in a bottle, it would smell exactly like Air-X. This is a aromatherapy blend used when seasonal threats are high, or when there is an abundance of toxins in the air. Think wild fires! Around Colorado we often see wild fires so this one is great to have on hand. It is also great for everyday use to simple help your house smell fresh and clean.

This blend is made up of:

  • Tangerine — Calming & uplifting
  • Grapefruit — Citrusy & fresh
  • Litsea — Refreshing & uplifting
  • Frankincense — Woody & calming
  • Cardamom — Invigorating & relaxing

The purpose of this combination is to freshen the air around you. Not only will this smell amazing in your home, but it will also provide immune and respiratory support. It has a fresh and uplifting aroma, promotes clarity and openness, may be cleansing to your environment. Living in Colorado means we sadly have to deal with wild fires way more often than I would like. Sometimes the smoke is so thick we are encouraged to stay indoors! This blend helps to reduce the irritation to our respiratory system and just smells amazing. By the way, if you are not diffusing pure, quality essential oils in your home we really need to talk.

I love diffusing this blend all by itself, or sometimes by adding Lavender and Wild Orange to the mix.

Try this in your diffuser:

Spring Air

? 3 drops Air-X

? 2 drops Lavender

? 2 drops Wild Orange

Would you love to try some? Easy enough!

Easy Immune Support

The world can be a germy place and even though our immune systems are designed in a magnificent way to take care of itself when we are exposed to everyday germs, sometimes we can give our bodies a little boost. Getting daily sunshine, eating whole fresh foods, drinking plenty of water, having a heart that is filled with love, and a mindfulness practice can keep our physical bodies healthy. These simple tools are available to most of us in this modern world and even making the slightest changes to your habits to include one or more healthy habits can bring about a healthy immune response to life’s stuff.

In addition to sunshine, yummy foods and plenty of water I also rely on plants to help support my immune system. My favorite delivery of plants is in the form of essential oils. I also love herbs, tinctures and other ways to naturally support my health, but essential oils are so easy they travel well. I can toss a blend into my work bag or keep in my pocket and apply all day long.

I have a daily immune boost blend that I apply to my lymph nodes each morning while my coffee brews. If I am feeling a little under the weather, I will bring this one with me and apply throughout the day, but typically it is one I apply as daily maintenance.

For adults, in a 10ml roller I add:

?10 drops On Guard

?10 drops Frankincense

?10 drops Lemon

Top it off with a carrier oil and voila! For kids ages 5-12, I would cut the essential oils in half and under age 5 I would do 3 drops each and apply to the spine and bottoms of feet daily!

You can grab these three oils at wholesale, plus my favorite carrier and some bottles and make your own blend! Actually these three 15ml bottles will make about TWENTY FIVE rollers. That is enough for you, your family and and friends for MONTHS of immune support. A typical roller used 1-2 times a day will last a couple of months.

This is great for helping the body do its natural job to prevent illness and support us staying healthy all season.

In over 7 years I can say confidently that I have had maybe one cold the whole time because I am consistent with this blend. This is pretty amazing since I work around a lot of people in long term care centers and indoor buildings.

The Top Ten Essential Oils

The Immune System and the Lymphatic System work synergistically to protect the body from harmful pathogens and disease.

Wait. What is it?

These systems include white blood cells, bone marrow, the spleen, tonsils, adenoids, appendix, thymus, lymph, and lymph nodes. When our immune system is working properly, it is able to identify a threat and engage in a series of responses designed to eliminate the pathogen from entering targeted cells and tissues.

Lifestyle choices can either strengthen or weaken the immune response.

Nutrition is an important factor in having a healthy immune system because cells need vital nutrients to safeguard the body.

Did you know  your essential oils have a chemical footprint similar to the human body, therefore, they have the unique ability to help the immune system bring itself to balance? Essential oils are fat-soluble (lipophilic) so they are able to penetrate the cell membrane and back up your immune system when you are feeling a bit run down.

There are so many uses for just these ten essential oils! And the great news is these come in two of my favorite starter bundles. Plus, when you get started with me, I hook you up with some awesome education and mentoring so that you know exactly how to use them, a free wellness coaching session, and a welcome package to get your started! You will also be part of a great community of people striving for wholeness.

A Simple Guide to Essential Oils

I am going to be honest. When I was first using essential oils I was so overwhelmed. I wasn’t sure what did what, if I was going to mess up or if I was going to make a horrible concoction, so I got a great resource book and starting learning. In no time I gained confidence and was able to learn how to use them safely and effectively.

Learning new things is exciting to me and this topic still excites me. When I am helping new people get started I often say, “remember when you had to learn how to cook?? You needed a recipe or cookbook, right?”…..Oils are so similar! We all need the equivalent to the Joy of Cooking when it comes to using essential oils. Here is my fave resource book to learn from.

Grab your resource book and commit to learning 1-2 oils a week! In no time you will be making up remedies, creating fabulous diffuser blends to switch up the mood in your space, tossing together a cool DIY and probably sharing your new knowledge with just about anyone!

If you are not quite sure how to even start using essential oils, check out this gorgeous ebook. It covers the basics and the cool thing is, when you get started I connect you to tons of free education and mentoring in my community and send you an amazing welcome package.

Keep this handy chart because it really can be asa simple as this, too.
