Overcoming Challenges: It’s Not Luck, It’s Perseverance, Mindset, and Optimism

Overcoming Challenges: It’s Not Luck, It’s Perseverance, Mindset, and Optimism

Life has a way of testing us. Sometimes it’s a small, quiet challenge — a day that feels heavier than usual, a moment of doubt, or a conversation that leaves us unsettled. Other times, it’s a seismic shift that shakes the very foundation of our world. In every case, one thing is clear: overcoming challenges isn’t about luck. It’s about something much deeper.

For a long time, I thought resilience came naturally to some people and not to others. I looked at those who seemed to navigate life’s storms with ease and assumed they were just “lucky.” But life has a way of teaching you lessons you can’t ignore. And slowly, I learned the truth: resilience, courage, and success are built — not stumbled upon.

Perseverance:
There is power in showing up every single day, even when it hurts, even when you’re tired, even when the path forward is unclear. Perseverance is the quiet muscle that strengthens with every small step. It’s the decision to keep moving, even when the world feels heavy.

Mindset:
Our thoughts shape our experience. When challenges arise, the inner dialogue we choose becomes the compass guiding our journey. A mindset rooted in learning rather than defeat, in curiosity rather than fear, transforms obstacles into opportunities. It doesn’t erase difficulty — but it gives us the strength to face it with clarity and grace.

Optimism:
Optimism is not naive hope. It’s a deliberate choice to see light in the dark, to believe in possibility even when evidence seems scarce. Optimism fuels perseverance. It softens the blow of setbacks and reminds us that our current circumstances are not our forever story.

Overcoming challenges is a practice.

It’s the gentle repetition of showing up, choosing our thoughts, and holding onto hope even when it feels impossible. It’s a commitment to ourselves that no matter the storm, we will find a way forward.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: challenges are not the gatekeepers of luck — they are mirrors reflecting the strength, resilience, and hope already within us. And when we persevere with the right mindset and optimism, we don’t just survive — we grow, we shine, and we inspire others to do the same.

Take a deep breath, honor how far you’ve come, and keep stepping forward. You are stronger than you realize. ?

Mindful Practice: Cultivating Perseverance, Mindset & Optimism

1. Center with Breath:
Sit comfortably and close your eyes. Take 5 slow, deep breaths, feeling your chest and belly expand and release. With each exhale, imagine letting go of doubt or fear.

2. Affirm Your Strength:
Silently repeat: “I am capable. I am resilient. I choose hope.” Feel each word resonate in your body.

3. Reflect & Journal:
Write down one challenge you’ve recently faced. Then write one small action you can take today to move forward, and one optimistic thought to carry with you.

4. End with Gratitude:
Close your journaling by noting one thing you are grateful for — even if it’s simply your own perseverance.

This practice takes just a few minutes, but doing it daily builds the inner resilience that no external circumstance can shake.

The Healing Power of Gratitude: Science-Backed Benefits for Well-Being

Gratitude: How Science Proves It Nourishes Mind, Body, and Spirit

Life has a way of placing us in seasons of challenge. During those times, it can feel almost impossible to see beyond the weight we carry. Yet, one practice has consistently shown itself as a lifeline for the human heart: gratitude.

Gratitude isn’t just a spiritual idea or a “feel good” phrase — it is scientifically proven to reshape our brains, support our bodies, and uplift our spirits. In moments when life feels heavy, gratitude becomes both anchor and medicine.

Gratitude and the Mind: Rewiring for Resilience

Studies using brain imaging have shown that gratitude practice activates the prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain linked to decision-making, focus, and emotional regulation. Regular gratitude journaling can even strengthen neural pathways, making it easier to notice positives in the midst of difficulty.

In fact, research from the University of California found that people who wrote down things they were grateful for each week reported fewer physical complaints and greater optimism than those who didn’t. Gratitude literally shifts our mental lens from “what is wrong” to “what is still good.”

Gratitude and the Body: A Calming Force

The benefits of gratitude extend well beyond the mind. Practicing gratitude has been shown to:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improve heart health
  • Support stronger immunity
  • Enhance sleep quality

When we pause and truly give thanks, the nervous system moves out of stress mode. The body softens, cortisol decreases, and we shift into a state of rest and repair. Gratitude is not only felt in the heart — it is carried through every cell of the body.

Gratitude and the Spirit: A Bridge of Hope

Beyond measurable outcomes, gratitude carries us into the realm of spirit. In seasons of loss, illness, or uncertainty, gratitude gently reminds us that beauty and connection still exist. It helps us hold both pain and possibility at once.

Spiritually, gratitude becomes a bridge — connecting us to others, to the present moment, and to something greater than ourselves. It’s a quiet act of faith, a whisper that says: Even here, even now, I can find light.

Practicing Gratitude in Hard Times

When challenges feel overwhelming, start small:

  • One breath, one blessing: Name a single thing you are thankful for as you inhale.
  • Gratitude journaling: Write down three things each night, no matter how small.
  • Verbal thanks: Speak appreciation to someone you love — it magnifies connection.
  • Body gratitude: Place your hand on your heart and thank your body for carrying you through.

Gratitude is not about ignoring hardship — it is about strengthening the spirit to meet it.

Closing Reflection

Gratitude is both science and soul. It quiets the nervous system, rewires the brain, strengthens the body, and uplifts the spirit. Especially during times of challenge, gratitude doesn’t erase our struggles, but it lights a lantern to guide us through them.

So tonight, perhaps write one line in your journal or whisper a thank you before sleep. It may be the simplest practice — and the most profound medicine — you ever give yourself.

A Mindful Path Through Healing

A Mindful Path Through Healing
A New Offering from the Heart

Something meaningful is in the works. And it’s coming from a place that’s deeply personal—shaped by lived experience, rooted in compassion, and devoted to healing in all its forms.

Over the past several months (and really, over the course of many years), I’ve been gathering what I’ve learned—through my own healing journey, through teaching, and through deep listening to others—and weaving it into something I’ve long envisioned:

A Mindful Path Through Healing.

This upcoming program is a sanctuary for those navigating pain, recovery, life transitions, or simply the tender uncertainty of being human. It’s for those craving a reconnection with their breath, their body, their nervous system, and their inner wisdom.

This isn’t a quick-fix or a checkbox approach.
There are no promises of perfection here.
Instead, what you’ll find is a gentle unfolding. A space to soften into your healing, to explore supportive practices, and to remember that healing doesn’t have to happen alone—or all at once.

This program is being built on the pillars I return to again and again in my own life:

  • Mindful movement that meets your body where it is
  • Breath practices to soothe the nervous system and anchor presence
  • Nervous system support rooted in science and soul
  • Rituals and nature-based practices to remind you of what’s steady
  • Mindset and reflection to support inner clarity
  • And gratitude—because even in pain, there is always something worth honoring

Whether you’re healing from physical pain, moving through emotional stress, or just feeling disconnected and unsure of your next step, this space is being created for you.

I can’t wait to share more soon.
For now, just know: it’s coming.
And it’s being crafted with you in mind—gently, intentionally, and with so much heart.

You are not alone.

The Soulful Wisdom of the Zinnia

The zinnia is more than just a burst of color in the garden—it’s a vibrant symbol of endurance, remembrance, and joy that lasts.

Native to Mexico and Central America, this radiant flower was named after Johann Gottfried Zinn, a humble botanist whose legacy lives on in every bloom. For centuries, zinnias have carried messages beyond their petals—whispers of lasting friendship, constancy, and the quiet power of being remembered.

In the language of flowers, giving a zinnia was a way to say, “You are thought of, you are cherished.” Some traditions even believed zinnias held protective energy—shielding homes from heaviness and gently inviting light and positive energy to grow.

What I love most about the zinnia is its quiet resilience. It thrives in the heat and blooms through dryness. It doesn’t demand attention, yet it catches your eye with a kind of effortless beauty. The zinnia reminds us that strength can be radiant and that beauty can flourish—even in the toughest seasons.

Each color carries its own soulful meaning:

  • Red symbolizes heartfelt friendship and affection
  • Yellow speaks of daily remembrance and joy
  • Pink represents lasting bonds
  • White offers a message of purity and goodness

The zinnia is a gentle companion in the garden—a teacher of grace, a keeper of subtle joy. It reminds us that blooming doesn’t require perfection, and joy doesn’t have to shout to be felt.

So today, I offer you this zinnia—not as a decoration, but as a reminder that:

That joy can be simple.
That blooming doesn’t have to be loud.
That your presence is already enough.

Let this quiet flower speak to you in whatever way you need. And may its wisdom take root in your days.

Navigating Chronic Pain: The Truth Behind the Smile

Navigating Chronic Pain: The Truth Behind the Smile

If you’ve ever scrolled through my social media, you might assume that I’ve moved on from pain—that I’m doing well, thriving, and perhaps even “healed.” But the truth is more complicated.

I live with chronic pain. And while my photos may show moments of joy, creativity, movement, and connection, they are not the whole story. Behind every post is a woman navigating her way through discomfort, fatigue, and the unpredictable nature of living in a body that doesn’t always cooperate.

Pain is not always visible. It doesn’t always look like struggle. Sometimes it looks like a yoga pose. Other times it is me in sunglasses, smiling through the ache. At times it is the sanctuary of my garden.

I choose to keep going, not because it’s easy, but because it’s my way of honoring life. I carry on and show up doing my best every single day.

Tips for Living with Chronic Pain

Create a gentle routine. Rhythm and predictability help soothe the nervous system. Having a consistent morning and evening routine creates a sense of safety and helps reduce flare-ups.

Move in ways that feel good. Whether it’s a simple walk through the garden or a short chair yoga practice, gentle movement can help keep the body open and reduce stiffness. Listen to your body, and let movement be a form of nourishment, not punishment.

Practice mindfulness. Tuning into the breath, noticing the present moment, and allowing emotions to be felt can ease the mental toll of pain. Even five minutes of breathing with awareness can shift how you feel in your body.

Build your support circle. You don’t need a large group—just a few people who understand or are willing to listen can make all the difference. Sometimes, being seen and heard is the best medicine.

Celebrate small victories. Chronic pain often requires redefining success. On some days, getting out of bed, brushing your hair, or stepping outside is a brave act. Honor these moments—they are proof of your resilience.

Chronic pain changes your life, but it doesn’t get to define it.

Cooling Cucumber Mint Yogurt Salad — A Summer Recipe to Soothe Your Pitta

Cooling Cucumber Mint Yogurt Salad — A Summer Recipe to Soothe Your Pitta

In Ayurveda, Pitta dosha governs the fire and heat in our bodies. When Pitta is balanced, we feel focused, energized, and warm in a good way. But too much Pitta—often triggered by hot weather, spicy foods, or stress—can lead to irritability, inflammation, and that uncomfortable overheating feeling.

This simple and refreshing Cucumber Mint Yogurt Salad is the perfect way to cool your system, hydrate, and calm that inner fire. The cucumbers and yogurt provide natural cooling and moisture, while mint and cilantro add soothing, digestive benefits that help reduce heat and balance Pitta.

Ingredients:

  • 2 large cucumbers, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup plain yogurt (or dairy-free coconut yogurt for a cooling twist)
  • 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 tsp roasted cumin powder
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: a pinch of black salt for extra cooling

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, combine the diced cucumbers and yogurt.
  2. Stir in the chopped mint and cilantro.
  3. Add the roasted cumin powder, lemon juice, and salt. Mix well.
  4. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes before serving.
  5. Garnish with extra mint leaves if desired and enjoy!

This salad is perfect alongside grilled veggies, light meals, or simply on its own as a cooling snack. It balances Pitta by soothing the digestive fire, reducing heat, and replenishing moisture.

Enjoy this summer treat that feels like a fresh breeze on a warm day!

Marigold Flowers: Vibrant Blooms with Powerful Garden

Marigolds are more than just cheerful, golden-orange blooms that brighten up garden beds and borders. These hardy flowers are beloved for their vibrant color, ease of care, and incredible benefits for your garden and beyond. From attracting pollinators to naturally repelling pests, marigolds are a gardener’s secret weapon for creating a thriving, beautiful outdoor space. Discover why these classic flowers deserve a spot in every garden and how you can grow them with success.

The Benefits of Marigold Flowers

  1. Natural Pest Repellent Marigolds are known for their ability to repel unwanted pests like aphids, nematodes, and even mosquitoes. Their distinct scent helps keep harmful insects away, making them a perfect companion plant in vegetable gardens.
  2. Attracts Pollinators While keeping pests at bay, marigolds also invite beneficial insects such as bees, butterflies, and ladybugs, supporting pollination and overall garden health.
  3. Low Maintenance and Hardy Marigolds are incredibly easy to grow and thrive in poor soils, heat, and full sun. They require minimal care, making them ideal for both beginner and seasoned gardeners.
  4. Long Blooming Season These vibrant flowers offer continuous color from spring to frost, bringing life and brightness to your garden for months.
  5. Medicinal and Culinary Uses Marigolds have been traditionally used in herbal remedies for skin conditions and inflammation. Their petals are also edible and can add color and subtle flavor to salads and teas.
  6. Improves Soil Health Certain marigold varieties release compounds into the soil that suppress harmful nematodes and improve soil quality for future plantings.

With their vibrant beauty and practical benefits, marigolds are more than just ornamental—they’re a true multitasker in any garden.

A few years ago I got to meet a lovely man from India who would attend my yoga classes. He always left me a marigold on my blanket or mat as he left. I often wondered why. This year when I was planting flowers, I decided to do some digging on the symbolism of them.

Marigolds are known as the “herbs of the Sun”.

They symbolize creativity, passion, brightness, positivity and happiness.

In some traditions, marigold seeds are planted in pots as a symbol of auspiciousness and patience to wait for the divine.

In the folklore, the marigold is considered a flower with magical powers. It prevents evil from entering the home, and carrying a marigold flower brings good luck, a joyful day, and protects from evils.

Modern meanings value the color and sunny beauty, which gives the flower a sense of optimism and a desire for success.  Therefore, you can use it to express the will to succeed, the beauty and warmth of the rising sun, or to share your joy and your good understanding of the relationship.

Their use in celebrations is believed to be tied to a romantic Aztec origin myth about two lovers. According to the legend, the lovers would often hike to the top of a mountain to leave flower offerings for the sun-god, and to swear their love and commitment to one another.

For centuries, Día de Muertos celebrations in Mexico have been characterized by the vibrant yellow and orange hues of the marigold flower. Marigolds are also referred to as “flowers of the dead”, it’s believed that the scent of these bright orange blooms help attract souls to the altar.

Pretty awesome, eh?

Becoming Obsessively Grateful: A Mindful Approach to Finding Beauty in Everyday Life

Becoming Obsessively Grateful

Lately, I’ve been leaning into the idea of becoming obsessively grateful—the kind of gratitude that isn’t reserved for big, shiny moments but instead floods every corner of the day. The warm mug in my hands. The way the morning light filters through the leaves. The laughter shared with a friend. The tender heartbeat of my own body carrying me through challenges I never imagined I could face.

I’ve noticed that the more I train my mind to seek these moments, the more they multiply. Gratitude, it turns out, isn’t passive. It’s alive, active, and transformative. It shifts the lens through which we see the world, softening sharp edges and turning the ordinary into something sacred.

What if we all became obsessively grateful? Not in a performative or toxic positivity kind of way, but in a grounded, heart-centered practice of noticing beauty and giving thanks for it all—the hard, the sweet, and everything in between.

Today, I’m pausing to whisper a quiet thank you to:

The flowers blooming despite the heat. The resilience of my body as it continues to heal. My little fur companion who brings joy with every soft pawstep. And to this very breath, because it means I’m still here.

What are you obsessively grateful for today? I’d love to hear.

The Beauty and Benefits of Black-Eyed Susans: A Gardener’s Guide

Black-Eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta) are more than just a cheerful burst of golden yellow in the garden—they’re hardy, pollinator-friendly, and surprisingly easy to grow. These iconic wildflowers light up borders, attract bees and butterflies, and thrive in a variety of conditions, making them a favorite for gardeners of all levels. Whether you’re planting a pollinator garden or simply looking to add long-lasting color, discover why Black-Eyed Susans deserve a spot in your landscape.

I have noticed that I am drawn to this type of flower–the petal kind vs the bud type. I have been growing these in my garden the last few years and they bring such happiness to my heart. They seem to just smile back at me when I smile at them. Plus, my veggie garden loves having them share space.

Maybe there is some intuitive truth to why I am drawn to these guys.

The Black-eyed Susan is the symbol of encouragement.

Considering its history of adaptability when it traveled from west to east, this is obviously a plant that in its determination to survive will bloom where it’s planted. And if there is one thing gardeners need, especially around mid-August, it’s encouragement.

Black-eyed Susans are known for being highly adaptable and for surviving just about anywhere. They’re resilient plants that can thrive even in inhospitable environments. This beautiful wildflower last incredibly long, growing in front yards, roadsides, and even in pavement cracks. They have become perfect symbols of resilience, motivation and encouragement.

After the flower has bloomed, the petals start to droop and expose the dark brown center. The way its center is exposed may also represent justice in a poetic way. Its golden petals shine a light to its otherwise dark center, similar to how justice brings light in the darkness. This light does not mean to condemn but encourages people to overcome and accept whatever darkness is inside of them.

No wonder I love them so much. I am all about being resilient and blooming wherever I am. ?

The Benefits of Black-Eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta)

 Pollinator Magnet
Black-Eyed Susans are loved by bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Planting them helps support local ecosystems and attracts beneficial insects to your garden.

 Low Maintenance and Hardy
These bright wildflowers thrive in poor soil, tolerate drought, and require little care, making them ideal for both beginner and experienced gardeners.

 Long Bloom Season
From midsummer through fall, Black-Eyed Susans bring cheerful, golden blooms that light up any landscape for months.

 Supports Wildlife Year-Round
Beyond feeding pollinators, their seed heads provide an important food source for birds in late summer and autumn.

Versatile in Landscaping
Perfect for wildflower meadows, cottage gardens, and borders, Black-Eyed Susans fit seamlessly into almost any garden style.

 Erosion Control
Their deep roots help stabilize soil and prevent erosion, making them a great choice for slopes and disturbed ground.

 Rich Medicinal History
Historically, Native Americans used Black-Eyed Susans for minor ailments like colds and infections, adding cultural value to their beauty.

With so many benefits, it’s easy to see why Black-Eyed Susans are a favorite for gardeners looking to combine beauty with purpose.

Black-eyed Susan also are an important source of food and shelter for many insects, birds, and, animals. Goldfinches sparrows, cardinals, nuthatches, and chickadees, are frequent birds eating the seeds. I see lots of little birds playing around these flowers.

Rooted in July: A Gentle Life in Full Bloom

Rooted in July: A Gentle Life in Full Bloom

There’s something magical about July — the way everything stretches toward the sun, how the days linger a little longer, and how nature reminds us to both expand and rest. This is the season of ripening — in our gardens, in our meals, and within ourselves.

If June was the invitation, July is the deep breath in.

Life in the Garden

This time of year, my garden becomes both sanctuary and teacher. Each morning, I walk through barefoot, coffee in hand, gently brushing my fingers over the herbs and peeking at what’s ready to harvest. The basil is bold. The tomatoes are starting to blush. And the flowers — oh, the flowers — are singing in color.

There’s something deeply grounding about tending to growing things. The rhythm of watering, weeding, harvesting — it slows the nervous system and brings me right into the moment.

Even if you don’t have a garden, simply noticing the season around you — the smell of cut grass, the hum of bees, the heat rising off the pavement — can bring you into deeper presence.

Eat What the Earth Offers

In July, I lean into simple, fresh meals made from what’s in season. Think cucumber-mint salads, grilled zucchini, homemade pesto, berry crisps with just a hint of honey, and iced teas infused with lemon balm or lavender from the garden.

Here’s one of my current favorites:

Garden-Fresh Summer Bowl

  • Cherry tomatoes, halved
  • Sliced cucumber
  • A scoop of quinoa or brown rice
  • Feta or avocado
  • Fresh basil or mint
  • Olive oil and lemon juice drizzle
  • Sprinkle of sea salt and cracked pepper

It’s light, refreshing, and packed with the vitality of the season.

Stay Cool, Stay Centered

While July can be expansive, it also brings intensity — in heat, energy, and pace. I’ve been reminding myself (and my yoga students) that staying cool isn’t just about air conditioning — it’s about staying centered.

Try this:

  • A short cooling breath practice like Sheetali or Sitkari
  • A few minutes with your feet in cool water
  • A walk at sunrise or just after sunset
  • A restorative yoga pose with a lavender-infused eye pillow

Let your daily rhythm soften with the season. Your nervous system will thank you.

Let Yourself Ripen

This season is not about pushing. It’s about becoming.
Let yourself bloom slowly. Rest deeply. Savor fully.

Whether you’re in your garden, on your mat, or at your kitchen table, may this month remind you that you, too, are a living thing — worthy of sunlight, nourishment, and ease.

With warmth from the garden and the heart,
Stacie
