The Beauty and Benefits of Black-Eyed Susans: A Gardener’s Guide

Black-Eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta) are more than just a cheerful burst of golden yellow in the garden—they’re hardy, pollinator-friendly, and surprisingly easy to grow. These iconic wildflowers light up borders, attract bees and butterflies, and thrive in a variety of conditions, making them a favorite for gardeners of all levels. Whether you’re planting a pollinator garden or simply looking to add long-lasting color, discover why Black-Eyed Susans deserve a spot in your landscape.

I have noticed that I am drawn to this type of flower–the petal kind vs the bud type. I have been growing these in my garden the last few years and they bring such happiness to my heart. They seem to just smile back at me when I smile at them. Plus, my veggie garden loves having them share space.

Maybe there is some intuitive truth to why I am drawn to these guys.

The Black-eyed Susan is the symbol of encouragement.

Considering its history of adaptability when it traveled from west to east, this is obviously a plant that in its determination to survive will bloom where it’s planted. And if there is one thing gardeners need, especially around mid-August, it’s encouragement.

Black-eyed Susans are known for being highly adaptable and for surviving just about anywhere. They’re resilient plants that can thrive even in inhospitable environments. This beautiful wildflower last incredibly long, growing in front yards, roadsides, and even in pavement cracks. They have become perfect symbols of resilience, motivation and encouragement.

After the flower has bloomed, the petals start to droop and expose the dark brown center. The way its center is exposed may also represent justice in a poetic way. Its golden petals shine a light to its otherwise dark center, similar to how justice brings light in the darkness. This light does not mean to condemn but encourages people to overcome and accept whatever darkness is inside of them.

No wonder I love them so much. I am all about being resilient and blooming wherever I am. ?

Rooted in July: A Gentle Life in Full Bloom

There’s something magical about July — the way everything stretches toward the sun, how the days linger a little longer, and how nature reminds us to both expand and rest. This is the season of ripening — in our gardens, in our meals, and within ourselves.

If June was the invitation, July is the deep breath in.

Life in the Garden

This time of year, my garden becomes both sanctuary and teacher. Each morning, I walk through barefoot, coffee in hand, gently brushing my fingers over the herbs and peeking at what’s ready to harvest. The basil is bold. The tomatoes are starting to blush. And the flowers — oh, the flowers — are singing in color.

There’s something deeply grounding about tending to growing things. The rhythm of watering, weeding, harvesting — it slows the nervous system and brings me right into the moment.

Even if you don’t have a garden, simply noticing the season around you — the smell of cut grass, the hum of bees, the heat rising off the pavement — can bring you into deeper presence.

Eat What the Earth Offers

In July, I lean into simple, fresh meals made from what’s in season. Think cucumber-mint salads, grilled zucchini, homemade pesto, berry crisps with just a hint of honey, and iced teas infused with lemon balm or lavender from the garden.

Here’s one of my current favorites:

Garden-Fresh Summer Bowl

  • Cherry tomatoes, halved
  • Sliced cucumber
  • A scoop of quinoa or brown rice
  • Feta or avocado
  • Fresh basil or mint
  • Olive oil and lemon juice drizzle
  • Sprinkle of sea salt and cracked pepper

It’s light, refreshing, and packed with the vitality of the season.

Stay Cool, Stay Centered

While July can be expansive, it also brings intensity — in heat, energy, and pace. I’ve been reminding myself (and my yoga students) that staying cool isn’t just about air conditioning — it’s about staying centered.

Try this:

  • A short cooling breath practice like Sheetali or Sitkari
  • A few minutes with your feet in cool water
  • A walk at sunrise or just after sunset
  • A restorative yoga pose with a lavender-infused eye pillow

Let your daily rhythm soften with the season. Your nervous system will thank you.

Let Yourself Ripen

This season is not about pushing. It’s about becoming.
Let yourself bloom slowly. Rest deeply. Savor fully.

Finding Joy in the Everyday: Why Simple Moments Matter

I wasn’t headed anywhere special. Just me, my sporty blue Jeep, a wide stretch of road, and that particular kind of stillness that comes when you’re not rushing to get somewhere. It was one of those ordinary days that didn’t begin with a plan. But as life often reminds me, the most beautiful moments rarely need one.

I had driven past fields and fences, wildflowers and weathered barns, when I noticed a quiet little scene that pulled at my heart. I slowed down, pulled over, and let myself be drawn into a moment that asked nothing from me—just presence. There, on the side of the road, surrounded by sun and soil, was a glimpse of simple beauty. And it was more than enough.

This moment became a gentle reminder: joy lives in the everyday. Not just in the big celebrations or grand adventures, but in the pause. In the noticing. Paying attention to the way the light touches a leaf or how the wind plays with your hair as you drive with the windows down.

Since we live in a world that constantly pushes us to do more, be more, hustle more, we forget how healing it can be to simply be with what is. To let the road stretch out before us and not be in a rush to arrive. Joy is not something we earn. It’s something we allow. It meets us when we slow down long enough to see it.

Pausing to appreciate small, joyful moments calms the nervous system, lowers cortisol levels, and supports emotional regulation.

Back in January, I set an intention for the year—a single word that would guide me, ground me, and gently pull me forward when things felt heavy: RENEWAL

At the time, I wrote about what I hoped this word would bring into my life. The year was fresh, and like many of you, I felt a quiet optimism tucked inside the unknown. Now, as we meet the halfway mark of 2025, I wanted to pause. Breathe. Reflect. Revisit.

What’s Shifted Since January

This year has unfolded in ways I couldn’t have predicted. There have been seasons of pain and fatigue, but also moments of resilience and creativity that surprised me.

I’ve had to adjust how I move through the world—literally and emotionally. What once looked like long hikes and high-energy classes now looks like short walks with a cane, deep breaths between strength training sessions, and meaningful time behind the keyboard writing and creating.

I’m still showing up—but in new ways.

Has My Word Stayed With Me?

Yes. In unexpected ways. It whispered through quiet mornings. It held my hand when I had to slow down. It was there when I reimagined what strength could look like in a healing body.

It’s not always easy to stay connected to a word or intention. Life gets busy, messy, unpredictable. But coming back to it now—six months later—I’m reminded that this isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence.

Looking Ahead

As we move into the second half of the year, I’m not setting new goals or adding pressure. Instead, I’m asking:

  • How can I honor this word for the next six months?
  • Where does it want to guide me now?
  • What would it look like to live even more aligned with this intention?

Maybe you chose a word in January too—or set a goal that’s gotten dusty. That’s okay. Let’s dust it off together. Recommit. Reimagine. Or maybe even pick a new one if the old one no longer fits.

The beauty of intention is that it’s never too late to begin again.

There’s something about the approach of summer that invites a softer pace. The sunlight lingers just a little longer, the breeze carries the scent of blooming things, and the days—though still full—feel somehow slower, more intentional.

Maybe it’s the way we instinctively start shedding the extra layers—not just sweaters, but expectations too. We begin to crave ease, simplicity, and the kind of joy that doesn’t ask for anything extravagant. Joy that arrives quietly in the form of a glass of lemonade, cool condensation running down the side, as you sit outside and let the day settle around you.

Lemonade is more than a drink—it’s a symbol.

Of childhood afternoons, back porches and carefree moments that didn’t need to be planned or posted or perfected. Just a slice of lemon, a spoonful of sugar, a little water, and the permission to pause.

That’s what summer whispers to us: pause. Be here now.

Before summer officially begins, I’m leaning into that energy. I’m letting the light teach me to soften. I’m rediscovering the happiness found in small things—fresh laundry hung in the sun, the sound of bees near lavender, the first bite of a perfectly ripe peach.

We don’t need to escape our lives to find joy. It’s right here in the ordinary, waiting to be noticed.

As we near the end of May, I’m also setting a few gentle summer goals—not rigid resolutions, but intentions rooted in presence and peace. Things like more evening walks, a little porch journaling, trying a new recipe with herbs from the garden, or reading something just for the joy of it.

Summer doesn’t need to be packed to be meaningful. Sometimes the best memories are made when we leave space for them to unfold naturally.

So here’s to making the most of the everyday. To barefoot mornings, homemade lemonade, and finding beauty in simplicity.

Pivoting with Purpose: Finding New Joy After a Year of Change

Pivoting is a natural and necessary part of growth.


In life and work, there are moments when the path we set out on no longer fits who we are becoming. Pivoting isn’t about failure—it’s about realigning with our values, passions, and evolving needs. It’s a courageous act of listening inward, trusting the unknown, and creating space for something new to emerge. Whether prompted by unexpected challenges or a quiet inner knowing, pivoting allows us to honor our journey while stepping boldly into a new chapter.

This past year has been a season of profound transformation—both personally and professionally. As many of you know, my journey with adaptive yoga has been at the core of my heart and work for nearly two decades. Teaching adaptive yoga in assisted living communities, mentoring, and sharing mindful movement has brought me endless joy. Yet, as life often does, it invited me—rather abruptly—into a new chapter.

Facing multiple hip surgeries this past year has required a full-body, full-heart surrender. Physically, the changes were immediate: my ability to teach in person was no longer sustainable. Emotionally, it was a gradual, tender unfolding—letting go of what I had built in one form and trusting that something new could still be born.

Rather than seeing these challenges as an ending, I chose to view them as a pivot point. I shifted my focus to mentoring others, developing online programs, and finding new ways to share the adaptive yoga methods that have changed so many lives. This transition hasn’t been easy—grieving the familiar while stepping into the unknown rarely is. But it has been rich with lessons about resilience, creativity, and the sacred art of beginning again.

On a personal level, this journey through pain and recovery also deepened my relationship with joy. I learned to find happiness not in big, sweeping achievements, but in the simple, healing moments:

  • Morning coffee shared with my cat curled beside me.
  • A slow, mindful walk without pain.
  • Watching the seasons change from my window and letting them change me, too.
  • Breathing into moments of gratitude, even when things felt uncertain.

This past year taught me that joy isn’t just something we stumble upon. It’s something we can intentionally cultivate—especially when life doesn’t look the way we expected.

There’s something so simple and sacred about baking with seasonal ingredients—especially when they bring brightness and joy into your kitchen. These Lemon & Strawberry Oat Bars are the kind of recipe that feels like a love letter to spring. They’re soft, golden, just the right amount of sweet, and filled with the zing of lemon and the goodness of strawberries.

Baking can be such a grounding, heart-opening ritual. As you stir and pour, layer and bake, you’re not just making food—you’re creating nourishment, comfort, and care. Whether you share them with loved ones or savor them solo with a warm cup of tea, I hope these bring a little sunshine into your day.

Spring calls for something sweet, light, and bursting with brightness. These Lemon & Strawberry Oat Bars are like sunshine you can taste—easy to make, naturally sweetened, and the perfect blend of tangy and comforting.

Made with fresh strawberries, zesty lemon, and wholesome oats, this treat is perfect for an afternoon snack, picnic, or simple celebration of the season. They’re gluten-free and can be made vegan with a few swaps.


Ingredients

For the base and topping:

  • 1 ½ cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup almond flour (or oat flour)
  • ? cup coconut sugar or brown sugar
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • ? cup coconut oil or melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup

For the strawberry filling:

  • 1 ½ cups chopped fresh strawberries
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds (to thicken)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line an 8×8 baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. Make the filling: In a small saucepan, combine strawberries, lemon juice, and maple syrup. Cook over medium heat until the berries break down and get jammy (about 8–10 minutes). Stir in chia seeds and set aside to cool and thicken.
  3. Make the base/topping: In a large bowl, mix oats, almond flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and lemon zest. Stir in coconut oil, vanilla, and maple syrup until the mixture is crumbly but holds together when pressed.
  4. Press about ? of the oat mixture into the bottom of the pan. Spread the strawberry filling evenly over the top. Sprinkle the remaining oat mixture over the strawberries and gently press it down.
  5. Bake for 25–28 minutes or until the top is golden. Let cool completely before slicing into bars.

? A Few Tips

  • You can use frozen strawberries—just thaw first and drain any excess liquid.
  • For a vegan version, use coconut oil or vegan butter.
  • These bars store well in the fridge for up to 5 days (if they last that long!).

While the bars bake, take a moment to sit with a cup of tea and breathe in the aroma filling your kitchen. Gratitude lives in these quiet, simple rituals—the scent of lemon zest on your fingers, the sweetness of strawberries, the warmth of the oven.

When we hear the word “abundance,” our minds often leap to money, success, and material gain. But true abundance is much deeper than what we can count or measure. It’s the feeling of contentment after a good laugh, the peace of morning sunlight, the love in a quiet hug. Abundance, at its core, is a state of being.

Gratitude helps us see what’s already here. It softens our striving and reminds us of the everyday miracles we might overlook. With gratitude, we begin to notice the richness in our lives that has nothing to do with wealth or possessions.

Ways to Recognize Non-Tangible Abundance:

  • A conversation that nourishes the soul
  • The scent of blooming flowers in spring
  • A moment of silence where everything feels okay
  • A deep breath after a hard day
  • The inner strength that carried you through a storm

Practicing gratitude doesn’t mean ignoring challenges or pretending everything is perfect. It means making space to honor what’s good—even when life is messy.

A Simple Gratitude Practice:

Each evening this week, write down three things you’re grateful for that can’t be bought. Let this shift your awareness from “more” to “enough.” You might be surprised at how abundant your life already is.

Affirmation:

I honor the richness of my life. I am surrounded by quiet abundance.

Abundance blooms when we realize how much we already hold. Gratitude is the doorway.

Living with Uncertainty: Navigating the Unknown with Mindfulness

Uncertainty has been a constant companion in my life lately. On a personal level, my journey with my hip—multiple surgeries, setbacks, and unknowns—has tested my patience and resilience in ways I never expected. Beyond my own experience, the world around us seems equally uncertain. From global challenges to personal struggles, we are all living in a space where certainty feels out of reach.

Setting intentions is like planting seeds in the garden of our hearts—each thought, belief, and action nurturing the growth of something beautiful. Just as a seed needs sunlight, water, and care to flourish, our intentions require patience, faith, and gratitude to take root and bloom.

For me, this season is about growing faith over uncertainty, trusting that even in the unknown, something meaningful is unfolding. I choose to fertilize this seed with gratitude, focusing on what is present rather than what is missing, and allowing each small step forward to strengthen my roots. With time, love, and consistency, these intentions will blossom into something greater than I ever imagined.

In addition to intentions, how else do we cope when the ground beneath us feels unsteady?

1. Acknowledging the Uncertainty

For a long time, I resisted uncertainty, desperately wanting answers and a clear path forward. But I’ve learned that fighting the unknown only creates more stress. Instead, acknowledging it—saying, This is hard. I don’t know what comes next, and that’s okay—allows me to soften into the moment.

2. Grounding in the Present Moment

Mindfulness has been my anchor. When my mind races with “what-ifs,” I come back to my breath, to the feeling of my feet on the ground, to the smallest sensations that remind me this moment is manageable. Even when the future is unclear, I can still find moments of peace in the now. I also find daily gratitude is the soothing balm for the painful uncertainty.

3. Finding Stability in Rituals

In a world that feels uncertain, small rituals create a sense of stability. My morning tea, my mindful movement (even if it’s limited), my evening gratitude practice—these simple things remind me that I still have control over my mindset and how I show up for each day. As I said a few days ago, a daily routine or ritual is key to stability.

4. Trusting the Process

Healing—whether physical, emotional, or collective—takes time. I don’t have all the answers about my hip or where this path is leading me. But I trust that I am moving forward, even when I can’t see the destination. The same is true for the world around us. Even in chaos, change is happening, and growth is unfolding.

5. Leaning on Community

Uncertainty can feel isolating, but we are not meant to navigate it alone. Talking about it, sharing the struggle, and finding connection reminds us that we are in this together. Whether it’s through a message, a mindful conversation, or just knowing someone else understands, community is a powerful antidote to fear.

Final Thoughts

Uncertainty is uncomfortable, but it doesn’t have to be paralyzing. By grounding ourselves in the present, creating small moments of stability, and trusting that clarity will come in its own time, we can move through uncertainty with more ease and grace.

The Healing Power of Giving: How Baking Bread Connects Me to Kindness

Pain has a way of making our world feel small. When we’re struggling—physically, emotionally, or spiritually—it’s easy to become consumed by what we’ve lost or what feels out of reach. For me, my journey with chronic pain and the inability to work in assisted living has been a deeply challenging transition. But I’ve found that one of the most powerful ways to shift my focus away from what I can’t do is to pour my energy into something kind, something bigger than myself. For me, that something is baking bread.

Every week, I bake fresh sourdough loaves for a church that feeds the homeless. There is something profoundly healing about mixing just three simple ingredients—flour, water, and salt—into a wholesome, nourishing loaf. But the true magic lies in the love and intention that go into each batch. With every stretch and fold of the dough, I pour in my care. As the bread rises, so does my heart. And when I place those warm loaves into the hands of someone in need, I feel a connection that transcends my own struggles.

Science supports this too.

Acts of kindness release endorphins, reduce stress, and even lower levels of pain. When we give from the heart, we create meaning in the midst of our own suffering. Baking bread has become more than just an act of service; it’s a form of therapy, a way to stay connected to purpose when my body limits me in other ways. It reminds me that even when I can’t show up in assisted living facilities like I once did, I can still contribute in a meaningful way.

For as long as I can remember, inner strength has been my guiding force. It has carried me through life’s challenges, helping me create a life filled with purpose, growth, and resilience. I’ve always prided myself on being independent, capable, and strong. But this past year—navigating hip surgery and the long road to recovery—has challenged me in a way I never expected.

The Power of Inner Strength:
I have always believed in pushing forward, finding solutions, and relying on my own willpower to overcome obstacles. This mindset helped me build my career, follow my passions, and navigate personal hardships. I thrived in my independence, knowing I could count on myself no matter what.

The Unexpected Challenge of Recovery:
But then, recovery forced me to slow down. It demanded patience, rest, and something I had never been fully comfortable with—accepting help. At first, I resisted. I wanted to prove I could still handle everything on my own. But the truth is, healing doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens when we allow ourselves to be supported.

Learning to Receive:
This year has been a profound lesson in a different kind of strength—the strength to receive, to soften, and to let others in. I have learned that true resilience is not about doing everything alone, but about recognizing when we need to lean on others. Accepting help is not weakness; it is an act of trust and courage.

Closing Reflection:
As I continue on this journey, I am embracing a new balance between strength and surrender. I still honor my independence, but I now understand that there is immense power in allowing ourselves to be supported. Sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is open our hearts and say, “Yes, I need help.”

Poses like Warrior II, Tree Pose, and Cobra encourage stability while inviting expansion—just like the budding trees reaching toward the sun.

  5. With each breath, visualize these seeds growing, nourished by your intention and daily actions.
