Memories and Mood

Nothing brings to life again a forgotten memory like fragrance.

– C Poindexter.

Did you know that you can use aromatherapy to improve your mood and remind you of memories??

Scent plays a huge role in how we think and feel, AND triggers memories. Our olfactory system (sense of smell) has a direct connection to the part of the brain (the amygdala) which acts as our emotional processing center and a direct link to memories. Don’t we all have a grandmother or aunt who had a certain “smell” that when we smell it we transport in time? This is why when you smell certain things you may experience a particular memory. Pretty interesting, right?

My little granddaughter Sawyer recently took home a box of crystals from my house and exclaimed to her daddy the other day “oh no, these don’t smell like maymay anymore”. I’ve been wearing the same blend of oils every time I am around her since the day she was born. Love that she associates my “smell” already. I have my grandmothers old medicine cabinet in my home and when I open it I instantly go back to being a little girl and getting treated with iodine and a bandage. Since I live in the house I grew up in, every once in a while when I open the coat closet I get a whiff of my mom and her career as a hairdresser and remember her coming home tired after giving perms all day and hang up her coat. It is such a crazy thing that our limbic brain holds onto memories that are associated with smell. Definitely check out this post about the brain…it is fascinating!

In my work with people with dementia and other neurological conditions, I use aromatherapy all the time. I love to share a blend of citrus oils with a touch of vanilla and tell a story that we are all young kids and the ice cream truck comes and on the side of the truck is something that smells just like that. I put a few drops in each of their hands and they smell it while I tell the story. Sure enough within a few seconds, someone will say “creamsicle” or “orange sherbet”. Sadly though not all memories are good. I usually spray the area that I will be teaching to gift an aromatherapy boost before the class. One day I sprayed a blend of orange, cinnamon, and clove. To me it smells like fall and the holidays, but to one of my students the clove triggered a horrible childhood memory and he was unable to stay in the class. I felt terrible and realized that not all smells are going to be welcomed. Lesson for me learned. Now I stick with pretty benign smells like citrus, lavenders and trees.

Pretty amazing that now that that we know this, we can use certain oils to uplift our mood or even relieve feelings of stress or worry and also create or trigger memories.

What is your go to mood oil? My all-time favorite is Wild Orange! It’s a beautiful “balancing” oil, meaning that depending on what are are feeling it can either lift us up or calm us down. It is a very unique citrus oil that has some pretty amazing benefits. I love it!!!! Heavenly! The blend that I have been wearing since my granddaughter was born that she now associates with me is orange, lavender, patchouli, rose and sandalwood.

If you are not sure but would like to try I’m happy to send you a sample to help your mood and memories!

“I am different, not less.”

 Temple Grandin

I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it and to imagine how it would feel. This poem was given to me when my girl was just eight years old and it changed my entire view of what I was given. In time this poem made more and more sense to me as I learned to not only accept the challenges that we had but also see that she was literally the little spark of goodness that opened so many doors for me to heal, and as a result it led me to do the magical work that I do with people with brain injuries and other disabilities in my community.

Today, I am proud to say my girl has grown into a sweet, kindhearted and somewhat independent young woman. She enjoys her volunteer job at the local animal shelter and loves caring for her dog, Emma. I was able to renovate my house a few years ago so that she has her own make shift apartment in my home where she lives with her dog as independently as possible. It has been my goal and focus that she become as self-sufficient as possible, not just for her own well-being but also because the reality is I will not live forever and I want her to either have success in supported living in the community, or be the least big of a burden to one of her brothers should they choose to have her live with them.

She has surpassed so much more than what anyone ever thought she’d be able to do. Of course, this came with decades of advocating, teaching and patience on my part and her willingness to do hard things.

This poem was the game changer for me and our life together navigating one of the hardest forms of parenting. Please feel free to pass this along to another parenting navigating this strange, yet beautiful experience.

Welcome to Holland

When you’re going to have a baby, it’s like planning a fabulous vacation trip – to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It’s all very exciting.

After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, “Welcome to Holland.”

“Holland?!?” you say. “What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I’m supposed to be in Italy. All my life I’ve dreamed of going to Italy.”

But there’s been a change in the flight plan. They’ve landed in Holland and there you must stay.

The important thing is that they haven’t taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It’s just a different place.

So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.

It’s just a different place. It’s slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you’ve been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around…. and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills….and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.

But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy… and they’re all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say “Yes, that’s where I was supposed to go. That’s what I had planned.”

And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away… because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss.

But… if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things … about Holland.

Breathe Easy

Another day, another Classic. This is one I can’t live without. Supported airways. All the back to school stuff that goes around and seasonal changes can make breathing a little difficult. I am in and out of assisted living homes all day and keep a stash of Breathe essential oil in my bag just in case I encounter some stuffiness or smells that do not sit well with my nose. It’s amazing how well it works!

You can use a few different options:

? The Classic: Breathe– a beautiful blend of Laurel, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Melaleuca, Lemon, Cardamom, Ravintsara, and Ravensara–maintains clear airways, supports restful sleep, and supports you through seasonal threats

? The NEW Classic: Diffuse equal parts Frankincense + Lime + Douglas Fir in the diffuser at bedtime to beat the stuffy and full head feeling.

? PRO TIP? Add DigestZen, Breathe, Frankincense and Lime to a roller for ultra support–roll over your sinuses and your chest for clearer airways from the first inhale.

What’s your go-to sinus and respiratory support blend? Have you tried a sinus steam or neti pot before?

Is Sleep An Issue For You

If sleep is an issue in your house, here are some of the top essential oils that can support you or your children and hopefully provide restful sleep throughout the night. The chemical constituents within each essential oil or d?TERRA blend are highly supportive of bringing a sense of calm and peace during nap time or at night time.

LAVENDER – is one of the most popular essential oils for restful night sleep. It’s floral, fresh, clean, and the calming scent is perfect when using in a nap time or night time routine, and is excellent for a beginner. Diffuse 4-5 drops of Lavender in the diffuser in your child’s room during sleep time, or apply on the bottoms of the feet about 20 minutes before bed.

JUNIPER BERRY – has been used for years, and is a favorite essential oil for emotions, irrational thoughts, reoccurring nightmares, and disruptive sleep. It has a deep earthy scent and is perfect for diffusing at night or nap time. Add 2-4 drops to a diffuser, or apply on the bottoms of the feet or across the forehead.

CEDARWOOD – has an earthy, warm, woodsy smell that is both comforting, relaxing and offers a feeling of being supported. Diffusing 4-5 drops in a diffuser can create a calming atmosphere, and applying on the bottoms of the feet promote rest.

PEACE -is a blend of Ylang Ylang, Vetiver, Lavender, Frankincense, and other essential oils. This fragrant oil is a beautiful addition to the baby’s night time or nap time routine. It has light citrus, yet calming aroma. Diffuse 3-4 drops of this oil in a diffuser, or apply on the bottoms of the feet.

CALMER – from d?TERRA’s kid’s collection, a blend of Lavender, Cananga, Roman Chamomile and Buddha Wood essential oils. It also contains fractionated coconut oil, which is a nourishing carrier. This oil blend is perfect for bedtime, bringing a calmer aromatic environment with a comforting scent. It is a d?TERRA blend specifically designed for kids and babies. DDR Prime

Many of you know I have an adult daughter who has a developmental disability as well as a life long anxiety disorder. The features of her DD look like minimal social engagement, trouble processing language and difficulty expressing herself—including feelings of happiness.

I started her on DDR prime a month ago and have watched the profound difference in her affect and willingness.

I asked her today if she felt anything different since starting DDR.

Her answer—“I feel a lot chipper”. ? Here’s to a chattier and happier girl!

I take DDR for my on going aches and discomfort as well as my cellular health.

DDR Prime includes Frankincense, Wild Orange, Litsea, Thyme, Clove, Summer Savory, Niaouli, and Lemongrass essential oils, shown in studies to promote a healthy response to free-radicals while supporting healthy cellular function.
